Single movie DVD of the year: Casablanca: Two-Disc Special Edition (Warner Bros.)

What Warner managed to do for a 61 year old movie is spectactular. It's a nearly perfect package, with spectactular video quality for a movie over half a century old. Solid commentaries, informative documentaries (even if some have been seen before), and even deleted footage was dug up for this set.

Movie Box Set Of The Year: The Adventures Of Indiana Jones: The Complete DVD Movie Collection (Paramount/Lucasfilm)

A long awaited title that lived up to the hype. Sure, it could have been better, and there are things missing that would have been great to have been included (deleted scenes, commentary) But the set delivered where it counted, with great video and audio, plus a solid 4th disc of extras.

TV Set Of The Year: 24: The Complete Second Season (20th Century Fox)

I can't imagine much more being included in this set that would improve it. Video, audio, extras, everything you get is not only top notch, but there is just so much of it. 24 episodes, an entire disc devoted to extras (not seen in TV sets very often), commentary, branching, even multi-angle footage. They take what they did with the first season and improve it in every way.

MovieFan999 12-25-03 10:13 PM

One I cant believe no one has mentioned The Loney Tunes Gold Collection, great cartoons, great packaging and great extras
Honarobale Mentions Casablanca, West Side Story, warner Brothers Star colledtion (not right name) finding Nemo (great movie with mediocere extras), TTT EE and Indianna Jones
I have not seen alien

stegon66 12-25-03 11:37 PM

Which title is "the best" really boils down to individual taste. A real poll would likely result in LOTR: TTT being named best DVD of the year simply because of all the fans around here. But whatever.

My favorites:

Three Colors Trilogy
Warner Legends Collection
Wings of Desire

I was also impressed by:

Criterion's Fassbinder and Truffaut sets, as well as the Alien Quadrilogy.

NaturalMystic79 12-26-03 12:54 AM

Alien Quadrilogy, with The Twin Towers coming in a close second!

gcribbs 12-26-03 12:54 AM

TT:EE

although we had a bunch of nice dvd's this year :)

davidlynchfan 12-26-03 02:01 AM

  to all the ones mentioned. This thread is like the South Beach for DVDs. Every DVD is so toned and sexy.Ahhh.....

Oh,:) Mines will be a tie: Eraserhead & Adventures of Antoine Doinel CC Box-Set.

GatorDeb 12-26-03 02:43 AM

Tie between Alien Quad and TTT EE.

Other great DVDs:
POTC
Terminator UE
Seabiscuit Giftset

Engel07 12-26-03 03:07 AM

Alien Quad with 9 DVDs in them...good bang for your money.

cfloyd3 12-26-03 04:10 AM

Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas: Criterion Collection

Yocke 12-26-03 05:33 AM

I can't decide between TTT:EE, Indiana Jones and Escape from New York.

SilverScreen 12-26-03 08:51 AM

Somewhat of a tough call for me as well...

Definitely between Alien Quad and TTT:EE

But I gotta go with Alien Quad for the best.

Snowflakes 12-26-03 09:38 AM

LotR: The Two Towers - Platinum Series Extended Edition Collector's Gift Set
The Gollum statue is amazing, combined with TTT EE DVD its just great...

Simpson Purist 12-26-03 12:37 PM

Alien Quad deserves my vote.

CaseyB 12-26-03 01:33 PM

For those who don't have Alien Quadrilogy yet, it's $50 at Fry's today only. :)

I have many of the movies on this list so far but the only one I've watched is The Ultimate Ric Flair Collection. :)

In CA, plus tax...equal to $54 out the door.

FreshOne 12-26-03 05:30 PM

For me it has to go to the Bergman Trilogy. It isn't slopped with extras, but they were probably my favorite films that were released this year. Colors Trilogy is another good contender, the Truffaut box and Throne of Blood also. Indiana Jones Trilogy was well done, but I don't like the films as much as the others. And thanks to all the publicity for our new governer in CA, Pumping Iron has a number of amazing features on it, when I previously clutched my VHS for dear life assuming no dvd would ever be released. It was indeed a good year for DVD, I'm sure '04 will be another.

antennaball 12-26-03 07:43 PM

LOTR: TT - EE.

best DVD in my collection, IMO.

mikewendt 12-27-03 07:09 PM

Honorable Mentions Goes To:
Who Framed Roger Rabbit: Vista Series
Indiana Jones Box Set
Day of the Dead: SE

There's Something More About Mary: CE
A Christmas Story - 20th Anniversary: SE

philo 12-27-03 07:23 PM

Off the top of my head my favorites of the year would have to be...

THREE COLORS
DAY OF THE THE DEAD
X-MEN 1.5

jayson1017 12-28-03 12:34 AM

Tokyo Story.

isamu 12-28-03 04:51 AM

THREE COLORS?
Tokyo Story?
Eraserhead?

I've never heard of any of these movies before. Are they any good? Descriptions?

nightmaster 12-28-03 03:01 PM

Man, THATS an interesting question and one I probably can't answer. TT is without a doubt an amazing piece of work that will be enjoyed by me and my 12 year old son for years to come. Seeing Escape From New York finally released as an SE this year makes it high on my list as well. As so many have mentioned, the Alien Quadrilogy and the Indiana Jones set are both welcome boons to my collection.......favorite DVD of the year is way too tough for me to call. Best DEAL of the year isn't though....Escape From New York SE from Wallyworld online for $9.98!!! :)

FilmFanSea 12-28-03 03:30 PM

I think the best release of the year was Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy box set from Criterion.

My Top 20 (Region 1) Releases of 2003 (in alphabetical order):

The Adventures of Antoine Doinel (Truffaut/Criterion)
L'Atalante (Vigo/New Yorker)
Beauty and the Beast (Cocteau/Criterion)
by Brakhage--an anthology (Criterion)
Casablanca SE (Curtiz/Warner)
The Devil and Daniel Webster (Dieterle/Criterion)
Eraserhead (Lynch/Absurda)
Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy (Criterion)
I Fidanzati (Olmi/Criterion)
A Film Trilogy by Ingmar Bergman (Criterion)
Hiroshima mon amour (Resnais/Criterion)
Once Upon a Time in the West (Leone/Paramount)
La Strada (Fellini/Criterion)
Straw Dogs (Peckinpah/Criterion)
Sunrise (Murnau/Fox)
Three Colors: Blue/White/Red (Kieslowski/Miramax)
Tokyo Story (Ozu/Criterion)
Trembling Before G-d
Trouble in Paradise (Lubitsch/Criterion)
Warner Legends Collection (Curtiz/Huston)

And even with twenty choices, I couldn't find room for such great releases as:

Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (Fassbinder/Criterion)
All About Eve (Mankiewicz/Fox)
Fargo SE (Coen/MGM)
Finding Nemo (Stanton/Disney/Pixar)
Night and Fog (Resnais/Criterion)
Talk to Her (Almodóvar/Columbia TriStar)
X2: X-Men United (Singer/Fox)

QuiGonJosh 12-28-03 04:23 PM

Alien Quadrilogy is the best DVD of this year or any year...TTT EE is in a close second...and Indiana Jones Trilogy at a distant third...

RevKarl 12-29-03 05:24 AM

Another vote for The Looney Tunes Golden Collection, with too many honorable mentions to mention.

Josh H 12-29-03 10:41 AM

LOTR: TTT Extended Edition. It's not even close.

EPKJ 12-29-03 11:03 AM

Well, since this is the favorite DVD release, I have no doubt that it must be Casablanca SE. Casablanca is my favorite film and this SE is sensational. I could not be more pleased.

Avid 12-29-03 11:45 AM

Loney Tunes Gold Collection

Star Wars Guy 12-29-03 12:27 PM

Indiana Jones Box set & Pirates of the Caribbean

dknight04 12-29-03 01:56 PM

There has been some notable DVDs this year. Quick remminder:
Finding Nemo
LOTR: The Two Towers EE
X-Men 1.5
Indiana Jones Trilogy
X2: X-Men United

DrMcKittrick 12-29-03 04:17 PM

TTT:EE is the winner hands down.

I wasn't that impressed with Alien Quad since we've seen half of it before. The price was too high initially and it looked as if they were trying to make up for the releases they had a few years back. It comes in at a close second though with the D.C. of Alien and Alien 3.

Finding Nemo is 3rd.

For me it has to be Alien Quadrilogy (R2 UK).

I assume you are taking the packaging for the R2 into account as opposed the lack of the full commentary tracks for the Directors cuts of the films as found on the R2 discs?
