THX 1138 DVD in the works!

No date yet, but it's being restored apparently.
From theforce.net:

Teemu tells us that www.apple.com just released an article in their trailers section under īMac & Moviesī called Restoring Indiana Jones. On page two called īRemoving The Veilī, you'll find some interesting new developments inside of Lucasfilm:

But restoring films remains Lowry's main business. He's working again with Jim Ward and Warner Bros., just finishing a restoration of George Lucas' first film, "THX 1138." "After we saw what he could do with 'Indiana Jones,'" says Ward, "we definitely wanted back in the queue."

It seems to mean that a revamped and updated THX 1138 is coming to DVD in the near future!
Haven't seen it myself, but thought some people here may be interested.

Yes, I second that. :-) I love this film and I'm very glad to see this finally coming to DVD.

I hope Lucas gets involved for a director's cut [ducks].

Apparently, THX was severely edited by the studio before its release.

Not 'severely'. But they did cut a couple of scenes out of the film. Once Star Wars came out and Lucas became a name, he had the material re-inserted into the film. All video versions (VHS and LD) have the footage included.

That's not to say that he won't continue to mess with the movie (this is Lucas, after all), but the current video version is the director's cut.

Never saw the movie, but would love to check it out.

It's a brilliant film, probably his best. But it's not something I could recommend as a blind buy. It's not a crowd pleaser type of film. It's a dark, dreary, Orwellian, sci-fi. It moves along at a slow pace as a character driven film. So you may or may no be bored with it.

Well, it is a director's cut. The scenes the studio cut against his will were restored. There are also some enhanced backgrounds and effects cleanups, in some scenes obvious enhancements. Some may not like that. But the changes are nowhere near as serious as the Star Wars changes. No lines of dialogue changed and no character moments changed. The white on white scenes are still there.

Oh wait, I think I have seen parts of this film. The second to the last screencap sparked a memory jolt.

I forgot the DVD coverart.

It is a DVD, and pretty well packed with features considering it's an obscure title that probably won't set any sales records.

Terrell 05-27-04 06:02 PM

That's why I said it was a great film that received critical praise, but it's certainly not for everyone. So there's no way I could recommend it as a blind buy. I'd say rent it first.

awesome cover art!
