Philip B. Gaines' Firefly: A Special Feature.

So I saw the thread here at DVDTalk and wrote the guy. He wrote back and put me on his DVD mailing list (2 e-mails total so far, both updates on shipping status).

I got it today and it looks very cool  It's in a plastic double case with the locking mechanism that you have to push in both little tabs in order to get the DVD out. The left side also has a booklet holder and there's a little booklet with an inspired intro and a little glossary (plot, irony, and Joss Whedon are some of the terms).

I haven't seen it yet. I have to crack open Firefly Season 1 (I have yet to see an ep). He worked so hard on this that I'm going to give him thorough feedback.

Anyone else here got it? What are you thoughts? I'll post mine here as I go through the two DVDs (episode commentaries and essays & character relationships).

Haven't gotten mine yet..

What did I miss?

woemcats 12-15-03 10:10 PM

What is it?

darqleo 12-15-03 11:09 PM

Huh?

CheapBastid 12-15-03 11:17 PM

I don't know what it is...

... but I'm sure I want one.

darqleo 12-15-03 11:19 PM

Thanks darqleo. I love it when people speak in code.

What's code about Philip B Gaines' Firefly: A Special Feature? :) There were at least 2 threads about it in this forum.

How does one go about getting this? iT JUST SAYS PAYPAL donations are accepted.

GatorDeb 12-16-03 04:59 PM

Write to him at [email protected]. The guy requires no money for it. All he wants in return is for you to watch it and spend some time giving him feedback. Since he spent hundreds of hours on this, he would appreciate thorough feedback :)

Here is the e-mail conversation that we had this afternoon which provides more information on this DVD project:

With a conversational tone, I discuss Firefly for 30,000 words and 3.5 hours of video spliced from the show. Most of the commentary is a sort-of faux commentary track where I follow along with a heavily edited version of each episode and comment about what I see (and speculate). It's basically 3.5 hours of Ebert & Roeper--only I'm better looking and you can't see me.
The commentary is split into 4 dozen tracks that are meant to be navigated by someone with a DVD player remote control and a bowl of popcorn.

The planning of the project acted as my Master's thesis project for a Master of Communication in Digital Media degree. Here is the description I presented to my committee: http://www.pbgaines.com/firefly/

Part of the point of the project is the very concept itself: a new form of media expression that I would imagine other critics/fans recreating for their favorite shows. It's free promotion for the makers of Firefly, so everybody wins.
BTA,

Philip B. Gaines

This gentlemen seems real nice as Gatordeb stated and now I am really looking forward to this DVD that he is kind enough to be sending to me.

Sorry Gatordeb... I never saw a thread about this until this one. Did you watch the Firefly DVD set yet? I did and it's great and I can't wait for Mr. Gaines' DVD to show up.

It's been a great week DVD-wise.

And Gatordeb, why are you BUNNED? Do you work for Cinnabon? ;)

GatorDeb 12-16-03 05:32 PM

Speedy, was that just you and him or are there like meetings I don't know about? :)

I haven't watched the series or his DVDs yet. Haven't had free time. I will be watching it all next weekend (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of next week).

I just wanted a cool title and since I didn't want to be banned, I became bunned :) It's the punchline to: "How did the hotdog feel right before being eaten?"

It was just him and I via e-mail.

I really enjoyed the Firefly set. Hopefully you will as well.

I've asked DVDTalk's Don Houston to do a review of Mr. Gaines' DVD.

That might not be a good idea. Bringing too much publicity to this release is likely to get Gaines in trouble with the actual rights-holders.

GatorDeb 12-17-03 10:07 PM

Do you really think they don't know by now?

I'd did so with Mr. Gaines' blessing.

His responses were as follows:

I read the thread. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

We have arranged for Don to get a copy of my project. Thank you.

I've been swamped before. I would love to see how such efforts turn out.

Thank you,
BTA,

Philip B. Gaines
