"Monster's Ball" - which version to get?

I've been wanting to pick this one up for a while, but can't decide between the standard release and the "Signature Series". The Signature series has an extended version of the film, but the standard release has better extras - most notably a cast commentary in addition to the director's commentary (which is on both discs). Does the additional material on the Signature release add anything to the film, or is it just a few extras seconds of Billy Bob's butt or something? Likewise, is the cast commentary any good - making it worth a purchase of the standard disc?

Any opinions?

That depends on how much of the "Monster's Ball" you want to see.

I don't want to see anymore!! - I just watched the Uncut version of that Ron Jeremy documentary the other day, so I've had my fill for a while.

Seriously though, is it just a longer sex scene? If that's the case I'll just get the standard release for the cast commentary, unless one transfer is better than the other.

The one where Halle Berry has more naked time. Since she can't act, this is the only worthwhile thing in the movie.

.....true that!!! Furthermore, I would even say that if it was up to me I'd skip it but since you have already made up your mind the above suggestion sounds good to me!

Buy the Signature edition..... rent/borrow the regular release

or visa versa :)

A few weeks ago, Target had the Signature version for $9.44 or something like that.

none of them.

Get the "unrated" version. The sex scene in "Monster's Ball" (great movie, by the way - and Ms. Berry CAN act, to all the naysayers who won't accept her because she's beautiful) is the most dramatically important scene in the movie. The longer sex scene is essential: It's more raw and truthful.

No, they don't accept her because she can't act. Sorry.

Alright, so she can act, but what's wrong with er most of the time? Does she just choose NOT to act well in so many films?

I would get the Signature Series release.

Rypro 525 12-10-03 10:46 AM

the signature series dvd has documentary that the older version doesn't have. oh and also the unrated version explains why it is called "monster balls"

jmj713 12-10-03 01:49 PM

I have both.

Yeah, I'll be the first to admit that Berry is often shoehorned into "pretty lady" roles that are, by their very definition, pretty shallow.

But Berry is great in "Monster's Ball," just like she was great in her small role in "Jungle Fever" years ago.

It's the story of one man's struggle with elephantiasis.

Thanks for the advice guys,

I think I'll get the Signature Series now, and pick up the standard edition later if I find a good deal or a good used copy.

Get the Signature Series, see Billy Bob Thornton's beanbag.

Jah-Wren Ryel 12-10-03 09:19 PM

Get the full-frame version, the widescreen version crops out some very revealing imagery.

FuzzyBallz 12-10-03 10:13 PM

Oh man, this thread's getting more disturbing by the post. If Billy Bob IS the monster's ball, why didn't he get nominated for it at the oscar?

And what unrated version? Prove it.

Prove what? You don't believe an unrated version exists?

the unrated version airs sometimes on skinamax, and is also on the dvd.

Simple answer - Because Monster's Ball is not a porno. I guess you've never seen a real pr0n.
