Help DVD Aficionado out...

Just thought I'd share this with everyone since so many of us use DVD Aficionado to organize their collections... Reorganize your collections to help alleviate the load on this wonderful FREE service!

FROM DVD AFICIONADO:

USAGE NOTICE

Our service provider notified us of excess usage on the server we used to keep our pictures. We had to move them to the same server where we have the rest of the site and this may cause slow response times depending on how many people are hitting DVDAF. This would be a good time for you to organize your collections into multiple folders with no more than a couple of hundred titles in each. We apologize for the inconvenience, but this is all we can afford at this time.

If your lists show up empty please wait a few minutes and try again. When too many users hit our server your folder may show up empty. It usually happens when Chicken Little goes to one of the big forums and proclaims: The sky is falling! Then we get flooded with hundreds of requests at the same time and we run out of database connections. Don't worry your data is safe. :-)

Thanks for your support!

Did it earlier this morning.

yeah...a few around here had a panic attack when dvdaf's router or whatever went down....all thinking that all data was lost forever.

too bad...I really didnt want to invest time into making folders...but I guess I might give in and do it. hopefully...they can wait until Sunday and through next week. I'm working 14 hours tomorrow...so forget it.

guess it's time to paypal'em another donation.:sigh:

AdamComic2 11-28-03 08:38 PM

I reorganized mine in like 20 minutes and I have almost 400

gutwrencher 11-28-03 09:34 PM

I have about 1,300 titles I'll need to place properly...not half-assed just to shove'em in a folder. 700 horror titles will need to be broke down into about 10 folders...not just lumped into 1 pile of horror. same with everything else....if I want to do it right. I'm thinking my past donations will buy me a few days...at least. I'll try to start it up this weekend....but 24 hours of work in 2 days is a freakin' ball-buster.

edited to add:

I hate folders. I'd rather have my titles all lumped together...as they are now. thats how I like it. just fyi.:D

I hate folders too, but it's free, so I'll do whatever will help keep it that way.

I prefer the folders. They make the pages load so much faster. JMHO :)

I never put my Hollywood stuff on Aficionado. Since I already have my entire collection on DVD Profiler, I just used Aficionado for my Anime and Asian Cinema collection, which is about ~180 titles for the anime, and ~5 for the Asian Cinema.

Saw the notice and promptly organized my collection into folders. Almost 300 DVDs and it didn't take too long (might as well do it while I have my mom's high speed connection rather than my 56k). After I get my student loan check in January I'll donate some funds to help the cause.

I'll help them out when they help me out and get "Very Muppet Christmas" and "Dune: Extended Edition" on their servers.

I've submitted them twice apiece, and they still aren't showing up.

You may also help them out with a donation so they can beef up their server.

I'm just saying.

Wow, I thought it was my computer! I had about 350 DVD's and whenever I went to m collection, it would take forever to load...lagged like hell. I then decided to put them into different folders by their genre.

ChrisHicks 12-01-03 11:04 AM

how do you create the folders?

matome 12-01-03 11:06 AM

I can't even get to the site now...

EPKJ 12-01-03 11:44 AM

This is why I use DVD Profiler.

majorjoe23 12-01-03 01:14 PM

I figured I'd help out and create Bond, Kurosawa and Hitchcock folders, but I can't seem to create new folders. When I go to do it, it shows they've been created, then when I go to move movies to them, they are no longer there.

thats a crock. I had WAY more problems with Profiler....and PAID for it up front. DVDAF hardly EVER has a problem. now tons of people are using it and they expect it all to be 100% perfect...for free. thats a joke. I have over 1,300 titles...and my list STILL loads in less than 45sec...big deal.

QuiGonJosh 12-01-03 06:09 PM

I dont like DVDProfiler cause it takes like forever to upload new titles...and Guzzlefish doesnt have a lot of titles I need to add...and DVDAF is just about perfect...

SCHMEGGA 12-01-03 07:46 PM

I organized mine into folders a few months back and have to agree that I like them that way. I appreciate DVDAF for their service and there patriotism. Keep it up guys.

I wonder why these don't come up with a search. Multiple times.

I guess I'll organize into folders now.

Thanks for that, btw.

If you put in two or more words, but leave out a word in the middle, it won't come up. For instance, if you search for "very muppet", and omit the word "merry", it won't come up. You'd have to search for "merry muppet", or "very merry muppet". I found that one by searching for "muppet", and then scrolling through the results.

Is anyone here helping them with donations? I like the site and have no problem giving them a few bucks. Plus with paypal it is very easy.

Go to your DVDaficionado list, click "My DVDs" & scroll down to "Folder Hierarchy."

Next, in your folder hierarchy scroll down to the 5 empty blanks next to the word owned and type in the names of the folders you want to use. ie. Comedy, Hitchcock, 1930's, etc. After doing this click "Save Changes" & you will then see your folders at the top.

Each folder has an assigned "sort order" that you can change with the lowest number being the folder you will see on the left & the biggest will be on the far right when looking at your list. You can number from 1-5 or how ever many folders you want.

After this just go to your dvdaficionado list and put check marks on the movies you want to move and then go to the drop down menu where you will see your new folders listed with the standard ones.

You may need to refresh your list once to see the new folders in the drop down box.

Also, if you want to delete a folder you will need to move your movies from the folder you created back to the standard owned folder before you can delete.

ChrisHicks 12-02-03 06:50 PM

thanks for the help. I suppose I could do folders to help them out.

I wonder how long it will take to sort 1600 titles?
