The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe animated
I saw this today in a catalogue I got in the mail from Family Christian Book Stores:

Their website doesn't have much info on it. Is it the version that came out in the 70's or is it new? Who does it? Voice talent?

Hmm, the cover artwork makes it look like a new version, but that doesn't really mean anything.

I saw a VHS tape on Ebay of the 1979 version with the same cover, though, which makes me wonder more. Unless the poster of the item put up the wrong cover.

I'd love to see (or make) a live-action version of the Narnia books, a la Lord of the Rings.

I have that DVD (got it from Amazon months ago). It's the 1970s animated version. Picture/sound quality is decent (not great, but watchable).

There is a live action version from the BBC available R1, but not too many people like it.

I remember hearing/reading rumors that there are talks of a live action Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe. Don't know the truth to that though.

Yeah, supposedly there will be new live action version, but you never know with these projects. Here's the imdb link...

The animated version is very loose animation, but it's still a great adaptation. The voice talent and the musical score are both excellent.

Walden Media is producing the new Narnia movie. From the Walden Media website;

About the Film
Based on C.S. Lewis’ beloved 1950s series The Chronicles of Narnia, the film is a live-action portrayal of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe—one of the most successful franchises in the history of children’s literature.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe tells the story of Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy—separated from their parents in London during World War Two. Sent to the country for their own safety, the children soon discover a magic wardrobe that leads them to the mystical world of Narnia.

Acclaimed director, Andrew Adamson (Shrek) joins award-winning writer Ann Peacock (A Lesson Before Dying) in bringing the classic tale to life. Walden has optioned the entire seven-part fantasy book series for film development.

Cast & Crew
Andrew Adamson—Director
Ann Peacock—Screenwriter
Grant Major—Producer/Design Director
Richard Taylor—Special Effects
John Howe—Conceptual Artist

In Production

I got very excited about Walden Media productions after seeing Holes and reading an article about them in the New York Times, Putting the 'Hip and Cool' Back in Family Films. Can't wait to see Narnia- in the meantime check out their other projects!

I watched this all the time as a kid and I would like to get my hands on this. Amazon appears to only have the live action version. Same goes for Deep Discount. Any ideas where I may find this?

This definitely looks like the 79 version. It's the version I grew up with and simply loved. I looked for it a long time ago and could only find the VHS version, The only one I could find on DVD was the BBC live action one.

Any hints on finding this one on DVD would be greatly appreciated.

I also LOVED this as a kid. Picked up the live action BBC version recently at Sam's Club but haven't yet watched it. May get this one too...

Jah-Wren Ryel 12-11-03 09:42 PM

How's it look/sound?

SilverScreen 12-11-03 11:11 PM

OK, just finished watching. The first 2 minutes of the transfer are pretty bad but the rest of it is actually quite good. There are no special features other than 3 trailers.

Looking back, of course I enjoyed it more when I was young but it was an interesting 90 minute walk down my childhood's memory lane.

calhoun07 12-13-03 04:17 PM

I got it. It was exactly what I was hoping for, though the transfer isn't the greatest, but still better than I expected for something this old. It beats not having it at all.

Wow - I remember seeing an animated version as a "kid", but 1979 would make me 22...

I wonder if I was still a kid then, or if there was an older animated version.

I'm VERY tempted. This looks familiar. Wish there were some clips to watch to make sure.

It is available at BN and Amazon:
