Coming soon: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: SE
Didn't see this posted anywhere. Apparently MGM wants to cash in on the Leone bandwagon. The Digital Bits reported that they are working on a special edition of the The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. It's said to include a new anamorphic widescreen transfer.
Hopefully they will re-release the entire Man with No Name Trilogy (Fistfull of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More)... but there's no word on an updated boxset yet.

Having seen this cut on the big screen recently, I must say that though it was an undeniably majestic experience, I'd be more happy with a remastered release of the original theatrical cut.

- 2003 film restoration of THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY -- which includes an English version of 15 minutes of footage previously missing from earlier US releases. The "missing" 15 minutes were recently dubbed in New York and Los Angeles sound studios by co-stars Eli Wallach (THE UGLY) and Clint Eastwood (THE GOOD). The voice of the late Lee Van Cleef (THE BAD) was substituted by voiceover artist Simon Prescott. The newly-completed English version will be presented for the first time in the Washington area at the AFI Silver Theatre starting Friday, August 22, (2003) with the special introduction and audience Q & A discussion with Wallach at the 7:30 p.m. August 27 screening.
would be interesting to see if the Q&A was videotaped and included on the SE
from IMDB:
In 2003, MGM Studios (to whom the rights to this film had recently reverted) in association with Martin Scorcese, Clint Eastwood, and original producer Alberto Grimaldi, painstakingly restored the original 3-hour Italian version using the 14 minutes that had been previously cut (and used only as a supplement on the DVD). Because these scenes had never before been dubbed into English, Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach (as well as voice doubles filling in for actors who had since passed away) were brought in to re-dub their lines into English. The film was also remastered in six-track Dolby Digital. This version premiered on cable's American Movie Classics network.

I think the scenes were better left out. Much like Apocalypse Now's famous deletes, GBU's deletes didn't warrant inclusion.
They should call it GBU Redux.
One of the only deleted scenes that I've ever thought really shouldve been left in is the Dallas Cocoon scene in Alien.
This is a situation that screams "seemless branching!"
Of course, I will get it either way.

Yeah, I'd much rather they rerelease the other two movies with some supplements than this one since its the only one with a passable transfer at this point (or at least rerelease SE's of those along with this one). Hell, on "For a Few Dollars More", the audio is out of sync for most of the film, something which is absolutely inexcusable.

The SE better include the original mono track!
They 'pumped' up the gunfire to cannon affect with newly recorded FX. Yet sadly took away the beauty of the origimal 'weez' sound effects which is what makes the film even more unique & special. Standard old gunfire can be heard in any film..& well it's just boring to me in GBU remaster.

There's a nice article on the restoration over at Movie Poop Shoot. This one is defiantly going on my preorder list.
