CITY OF GOD in febuary!

November 17, 2003 - On February 17, 2004, Miramax Home Entertainment will release the highly-acclaimed City Of God, the story of crime and punishment inside the gangs of Rio de Janeiro's slums, on DVD for a suggested price of $29.99.

The film's unflinching look at the Rio slums has been hailed by international audiences as a triumph of cinema, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film (2003) and winning the American Film Institute's Festival Audience award (2002).

The film is set in the Cidade de Deus (City of God) housing project that's been infested by crime and drugs, making it one of the most dangerous places in Rio de Janeiro. The story focuses on two boys, Rocket and Lil Dice, growing up in this violent neighborhood and doing what they can to survive.

There isn't much detail on the DVD, other than a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen print, Dolby Digital audio and a one-hour bonus feature, News From A Personal War. We'll have more details for you as they become available.

uhhhhh wasn't there an unrated cut of this?

Since this movie came out in the U.S. in January, this 13-month journey to home video is a little perplexing. I haven't heard anything about a unrated cut, but if one did indeed exist we aren't likely to see it from Miramax. BV does not release NC-17-rated films, or unrated films that would have earned such a rating, in any form, DVD or otherwise.

Used to be the case, yes, but a few are unrated/uncut.

This is great news!

I'd definitely like to hold my breath on an unrated version, but I fear I'll eventually pass out....

I am also curious to know how much of the supplements are in English (if any), beautiful packaging by the way. It would be great if Miramax/Buena Vista could port some if not all of the supplements for the US edition (DTS would also be great, since the Region 3 has it, but I ain't holding my breath).

AFAIK, City of God was Rated R during its theatrical run in the US. There was talk of a "director's cut" being created specifically for the DVD release but I haven't heard anything new about that in the last 8 months.

Anybody know the source of the DVD announcement?

I wouldn't assume that extras on any foreign DVD would have subtitles.

I suspect the R1 will have the same contents as the R2 from the UK. That DVD has a documentary that's not on the Brazilian version: http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=5649

I have a multi-region player, but I've been holding up on this one until I saw some comparison reviews and details of the R1 version.

Edit to clarify Giles quote. I wasn't aware of an HK version.

I wasn't aware of an Hong Kong version. The R4 from Brazil doesn't have DTS, The HK does.

I do.

The transfer for the film is 4:3 letterboxed non-anamorphic. The main extra on the second disc, which is an hour long documentary on the making of the film, is English-subtitled.

Wait for the r1.

from dvdfile:

Rounding out today's news is the February 17th debut of the highly-acclaimed Brazilian epic City Of God (aka Cidade de Deus). Buena Vista Home entertainment will release the critical hit as a special edition, complete with a 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack and the one-hour documentary "News From A Personal War." Retail is $29.95.

Amazon hasn't updated their page yet.

The release date is Feb. 17th. Don't know why it's taking Amazon such a long time to update their info.

just wondering, what type of movie should I expect, it got nominated for several oscars. I noticed that its Rated R for strong brutal violence, sexuality, drug content and language, so is this more of an action movie.

It's definitely not an action film.

A gang-related film with violence - most of it against kids (which is why I suspect it's R).

Amazing film... rent it first to make sure you like it.

A good film -- solid, enjoyable -- but I think many people will conclude that it doesn't live up to the hype. Kind of like DIRTY PRETTY THINGS in that regard.

...and how about this statement....

This film made me consider issues I have never been at ease with....great film not a good one.

Which film? What issues? If you're speaking of DIRTY PRETTY THINGS, I'll add here that while I enjoyed the film and would recommend it (hell, I own the DVD -- and CITY OF GOD, to boot), I've seen the issues it raises depicted just as effectively in an episode of LAW AND ORDER.
