Dalvin, CHESS was indeed on Broadway, but that does not necessarily mean it was ever filmed or taped for video. Most Broadway productions never get produced for video, and only some adapted for the big screen. However, all Broadway shows get taped for archival purposes, and you can see the original Broadway production of CHESS by going to the Lincoln Center library and asking to watch the tape. |
Jesus Christ Superstar
|
Two fairly recent Braodway shows that were taped live during performance and are now available on DVD:
Putting It Together Smokey Joe's Cafe |
If you have a region free DVD player, "Chess" was released in Sweden (although it is not in English). You can order it from:
http://www.skivhugget.se/eng/ (Type in "chess" in the "artist" search box and you can see the page). In the UK, they are also releasing "Taboo", Boy George's new musical. You can order it from: www.dresscircle.co.uk OR http://www.btinternet.com/~s.essom/taboodvd.htm For other musicals on DVD, check out: MUSICALS ON DVD |

Hello Dolly
Jailhouse Rock |
...erm... Gypsy... and Gypsy... and Sunday In The Park With George... and Carmen Jones...
and Pal Joey... and Into The Woods... and Victor/Victoria... and Victor/Victoria... and... and... ...regrettably, so far Flower Drum Song only exists as a pan'n'scam laserdisc... . . . :o . . . |
Chicago and Jesus Christ Superstar are two of favorites.
At the top of my top 3 (and not mentioned): Camelot |
...ahh, yes, of course!... Camelot... and The Music Man... and You'll Never Get Rich... and if you're equipped to play R2/PAL discs (and provided it's still available somewhere) there's the Brit musical based on "Wuthering Heights" and starring Cliff Richard: Heathcliff... and - for something different - Jacques Demy's 1964 French all-singing musical Les Parapluies de Cherbourg... and the long unavailable in/on any medium Annie Get Your Gun...
...and a trio of musicals starring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra: Anchors Aweigh, Take Me Out To The Ball Game and On The Town... ...and soon, from WB...: The Great Ziegfeld... . . . :o . . . |
Singin' in the Rain
Hedwig and the Angry Inch Dancer in the Dark come to mind as excellent musicals and well done films. |
The Music Man is one of the best.
|
Perhaps I'm a traditionalist, but SINGIN IN THE RAIN and THE WIZARD OF OZ get my vote (both excellents discs, too). I would also recommend ON THE TOWN and 42nd STREET.
I would recommend AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, too, but I'm hoping the current disc will be replaced with a 2-disc SE. It's certainly a great candidate for that sort of treatment. |
The Harvey Girls w/ Judy Garland
