I think some other people already got this right. This is possible since they would want to piggyback on the advertisements and get in on the holiday season. Whether or not it happens remains to be seen...

I don't think the DVD would actually take that long to produce either. Isn't just about everything for the DVD done in post-production now? And, at worst, they can release a barebones DVD and then come with the super-duper-must-own-if-you-are-a-fan set later... I don't see anyway for this disc to not be released and rereleased...

Anyways, jim_cook87 put an informative breakdown of the percentages amd dropoffs. From just looking at the percentages, it appears Revolutions is on par with the norm.

Being the skeptic that I am, I looked at the actual numbers courtesy of boxofficemojo.com. Matrix 3 made 16.5M on Friday and 19.5 on Saturday. Compared to Matrix 2 which made 31.3M on Friday and 34.4 on Saturday. That is a huge difference, and probably not what they expected.

If these trends continue... It will probably make just a little over half of what Reloaded made. I think thats being generous though, since this movie is getting extremely bad publicity. A lot of money still, but not the profits they expected.

Guess that makes three of us. I've been expecting a box set from the beginning, so I never did purchase it.

Now that the final two films have been released, I'm not so hot for a box set. :)

Though, I think I'm the only one who thinks Reloaded was *way* better than Revolutions.

I'm in the same boat as you, except I bought the first one. I didn't particularly like the 2nd one, but compared to the 3rd one it is much better. I was also anticipating buying a box set, but now that I've seen 3, I'm not so sure I will buy it, unless they have something worthwhile to offer.

There were two important peices of information missing from the original data, too:

1) Actual numbers (a 50% drop of from 8 mil. is still better than a 10% drop of from 4 mil.), and

2) Anticipated performance . . . I think the expectations for Matrix: Revolutions were a tad higher than the ones for Bringing Down The house and Anger Management (for example).

I, too, am often skeptical and, apperantly, a little more of a geek. :D I actually hit Excel to check out some hypothetical numbers. Assuming that each movie started out with the same number of viewers on opening day (I used 1 million) and using those drops in viewing percentage, out of those 11 movies, only X2, Anger Management , and Bringing Down the House would have fewer viewers than Revolutions after that first Monday. Considering the amount of hype around this film, I would think that that would indicate a poorer performance than expected.

If buying a boxset is the only way to obtain Revolutions, I will personally hunt down the Wachowski brothers and rape them.

I understood you before. My point is that FJ2K WAS NOT IN THEATERS (or at least being screened) in weeks 4-8. It didn't last past weekend #1 in most cities. So my point is why would they complain about it being released on DVD so early when it wasn't being screened any longer?

The concern is that the simple knowledge that a movie is going to be on DVD in 6 weeks will prevent people from going to the theater to watch said film. yes, FJ2K bombed, but this argument took place before. With regards to the Matrix, well, it's not going to be like FJ2K. If someone would like me to explain why, well, you're stupid. Matrix will be around in 6-8 weeks, most likely not top ten but nonetheless around. But if news of this movie being on DVD is true, and is announced in this or the next couple weeks, then box office could very well be hit more by people saying "why go, it'll be on tape soon." So it isn't just the latter weeks, it's also the initial weeks.

We'll see how it all shakes out, but considering how many people already have the first two Matrix movies, it makes absolutely no sense to only be able to buy the third one if you buy the first two. I, for one, will buy the third movie (I preferred it to the 2nd, actually) if it is sold by itself, and will not buy it if I have to rebuy the movies I already have (unless it cost the same for all three it would normally cost for just one). I can't believe I'm the only one.

This is a stupid rumor. There is zero possibility of a movie that opened in theaters last week being on DVD before this Christmas. Especially a movie that opened at #1 with a huge weekend, regardless of whether it was or wasn't as huge as it might have been. It was still huge.

Revolutions will come to DVD in May or June, and we'll see an individual release as well as likely a box set of the three.

I don't think you're the only one. I'm in the same boat, except if the box set includes an upgraded version of the first film and other features i'll gladly buy the box set and give away my copies of the first two. If they're just repackaged versions of the two movies already out, then no way.

November 19, 2003 - The Matrix Revolutions is coming home, a little faster than many people might have thought. The final chapter in the trilogy by the Wachowskis will be hitting stores on January 6th, 2004, according to a notification that was sent out to certain retailers earlier today.


IGN FilmForce reported last week that meetings had taken place at Warners regarding an early release of the film to DVD as a response to the film's weak domestic box office and distribution over the Internet. No word on what special features will be included on the disc.

Warner Home Video yesterday confirmed to a number of retailers that the upcoming region one release of The Matrix Revolutions will be arriving in shops from the 6th January next year.
