finding nemo in fullscreen
 

sorry if this has been mentioned before, but in the introduction on disk 2, the guy in the red shirt says that the fullscreen version is not chopped, but enhanced, so we get the full screen without losing anything.

and speaking of Finding Nemo, did anyone else find that fish charades game to be hard? lol I feel like a total dumbass, but i missed the first 3 in a row

they reformatted it in full screen so you may be able to see more, but everything feels cramped, and still, the movie should always be seen in widescreen

Do you mean Finding Nemo or any movie in general? If you mean any movie in general I think some would take issue with that. Also, what if you're showing this movie to a screaming kid and the only way to shut him up is to put the FS version on? I think I'd take FS over WS (oar) just to shut the screaming kid up, but that's just me...

That is quite a discriminating screaming little kid.

They had a featurette on the process where they actually digitally re-composed many shots/scenes for fullscreen.

Kinda cool.

Please explain that. To me, open matte FS transfers feel way too open.

There's a reason the dead space on the top and bottom is covered up... it's dead space.

What it means is that, since these are CG animated movies, they actually go back to certain shots and move the characters around to reframe the shot so it works in fullscreen. While I imagine it isn't done in every shot, it is done in the ones that wouldn't work if pan and scanned. Pretty impressive actually.

I would just pop a potato in his mouth to silence the screaming.

How many kids do you know that actually scream due to black bars?

Kids don't care about the black bars, most of them have grown up in a time where letterboxing is far more common than it was even 10 years ago. It's the parents and the grandparents that mostly complain about pictures not filling up the whole screen.

Not that any of this matters for Nemo since you get both versions anyway. Watch whatever version you want, but don't try and pin a kid's crying on black bars, maybe they're crying because their friends have 57" Widescreen TV's while their folks only have a 19".

My kids love the black bars... I just turn the lights off, then they think they are in a theater. :up:

My daughter had never complained about the black bars, and I show her all her movies in widescreen. I don't know where the myth that "kids hate widescreen" originated from, since it's almost always adults who don't like the black bars...kids will accept anything you show them, and are must more adaptive to new technology.

The reformatted fullscreen thing isn't new. Pixar first did it with A Bug's Life.

There is a featurette showing how this was done on the Bug's Life Collectors Edition DVD. It's really interesting but I won't watch the fullscreen version.

Would you like to place a bet on that? My friend's 4 year old kid does exactly that. I tried to put in Monsters Inc when he was over here one time and went to widescreen and he started screaming bloody murder.

i know there is a link either here or on one of the other forums, where we see a comparision between the wide and full versions of monster's inc. even though we may see more, it still feels a bit cramped. And with people and black bars, just put on mtv2 and most of the videos are in widescreen, and you won't find many complaints.

I don't think I would show a movie to a screaming kid, but that's just me.

I keep a video tape showing a baby being born on hand. When the kid is screaming, I pop it in and play it in reverse.

My 4-year old daughter doesn't scream, but on DVDs that have both versions she definitely wants the full screen version... She'll learn eventually!

Let's see... Kid screams to get his way. Parent gives in to shut him up. Just what has parent taught kid?

Turn it off when this happens. Do NOT teach the kids to cry/scream for what they want. Trust me, turn it off and tell him he doesn't get the movie until he is quiet. Be calm, don't yell (well, maybe one word just to get through his yelling), be firm. Pull the disc out and start putting it away. He WILL shut up. Then be nice and offer the FF version if he really wants it. This goes for anything, movie/toy/candy/etc.

I know, I'm one of the worst non-OAR haters on the board, but some things are more important. Being nice to the neighbor kid would be a valid exception in my book. BTW, my kids prefer WS. :D

In case someone wants qualifications: I have a 5 year old, 3 year old, and 1 year old. They are NOT allowed to scream like this over anything. (and yes, I'm crazy and a little tired)

Nothing shuts a kid up like a soldering iron to the nads. Damn permissive parenting...

Seriously though, enabling a screaming, temper-tantrum-throwing kid by caving in and giving them whatever they want in order to curtail their inexcusable behavior is pretty much the worst example of parenting I can imagine...

But the widescreen version is fullscreen!
