Could the Regans see light of day on DVD?

Simple enough question. Is work on the movie done? If it could get a direct to DVD release, perhaps they could avoid the political BS from commercial network TV.

Preacher 11-05-03 11:01 PM

They have created a market for this of a much larger volume by this happening. It will still get to TV and then the DVD will have both versions and should sell well. Everyone should have ignored it and it would have gone away. They'll never learn.

GuessWho 11-05-03 11:16 PM

The movie was sold to Showtime.

And there's an A in Reagans

Anblue 11-06-03 12:01 AM

Why would you waste your time on a totally B television movie anyway? From what I've read, the dialogue is laughable.

I'm going to watch it just to tick my right-wing friends off...

Tarnower 11-06-03 05:45 AM

The Reagan kids said that from what they have seen of the movie, it more resembles a parody skit from "Saturday Night Live" rather than an attempt at a realistic depiction. I won't bother watching, even if it hits DVD (which I'm sure it will). I admired Ronald Reagan and thought he was the most influential and important president of my lifetime. I just don't want to see him mocked and disgraced through a political butchering by partisan leftist liberal politics. I actually think the careers of those involved (especially Barbra Streisand, who obviously doesn't understand or care about the idealogy of the average American citizen) will be forever damaged.

Bottom line. This was totally inappropriate. Maybe in ten years or so. But not when the man is in the last stages of Alzheimer's and his wife his constantly at his bedside acting as caregiver.

And they call themselves compassionate!!!!!!!!!

EPKJ 11-06-03 06:53 AM

I wouldn't buy this piece of garbage either. Les Moonves, head of CBS, and a self-proclaimed liberal Democrat, stated that the film was biased and incapable of being repaired through editing. In other words, it is a pure slam job with no merit. I agree with Tarnower that those associated with this have permanently damaged their careers. Barbra Streisand seems bent on destroying her husband's career and reputation as thoroughly as she has destroyed her own. Ronald Reagan was the greatest president of the last half of the twentieth century. He would deserve that title for ending the Cold War alone, but he did much more.
Showtime will be harmed by this, and has already lost subscribers over the film. This will not sell well on DVD either. It is a losing proposition for all involved.

kmac 11-06-03 09:12 AM

This will probably make it to DVD and beat 'Finding Nemo' for sure.

I heard that there is an alternate ending of 'The Reagans' that will be on the DVD. In it, Babs makes a cameo appearance as an enlightened spirit who curses the presidential homophobe for all of his misdeeds. Soon thereafter, Nancy sleeps with the chairman of the board and Ronnie gets the dreaded Alzheimer's disease.

CBS made them cut this out of the movie.

The scary thing is that this is almost believable given what is actually in the movie.

Screw Ronnald Regan and his rite wing krones!!!!!!! THis Attack on our first amenemant rites by crazy ritewingers is just sick and shows that their stupid and can't take it when the TRUTH is told by the media and not the media controled by Halliburton or ENRON!!! They should have left it alone because now people WILL WANT TO SEE the TRUTH and resident Booooosh will fall in 2004, he didnt even finish his second book a coloring book too LOL!!!!! GOD BLESS MICHAEL MORE!!!!!! Speak Truth to powder!!!

(er...only kidding. Just thought it'd be fun to get into the spirit of things. It certainly is liberating not having to worry about grammar, spelling, punctuation, and etc., however.)

EPKJ 11-06-03 11:47 AM

I got a kick out of reading Barbra Streisand's comments on her website about this matter. She first decries the decision of CBS as being a blow to "artistic freedom". She then admits that companies have a right to decide what they will or will not air. In other words, she contradicts herself. Barbra is such fun.

Numanoid 11-06-03 12:09 PM

I would have never watched this film on CBS, but I'll definitely try to catch it on Showtime...particularly if it is as bad as claimed. Brolin's pretty laughable in anything he does, but seeing him try to be Reagan must be a hoot.

Kaffe_02 11-06-03 12:25 PM

LOL this is so funny, Brolin as Regan. HAHAHAHAHAHA

For some reason that line made me snicker at my desk.

I do not see why some people look at this as censorship. It is not like the government came in and told CBS not to air it.

CBS just wants to avoid being too controversial. They would hate it if people stopped watching Raymond and Survivor.

It was the people of Hungary, Czechoslovakia and the GDR who stood up and started demonstrating against their socialist dictators, facing imprisonment or worse. While the entire western world supported these developments, including the US, saying that Reagan "won" the cold war just doesn't do those brave people justice.

That's My Bush aired. What's wrong with this? I will never understand our censor-like society.

I think it is a bit different since that was more of a satirical show. It is one thing to poke fun at someone on SNL or another show, but another to lie about the events of someone's life for political gain.

If Ronald Reagan had never called the Soviet Union the "evil empire" and engaged them in an arms race they could never win, all those demonstrations would have been crushed by brute force as were those in Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1967. Try reading history before making uninformed and ridiculous assertions.

I think also his strong relationship with Gorbachev helped. I watched a documentary on the History Channel about Reagan. He did not single-handedly kill communism and end the cold war, but he was a major factor. People should not completely dismiss that.

I disagree. It took Reagan walking out at Helsinki and other displays of strength and determination to achieve the end of the Cold War. Gorbachev was not a great guy. He was a lesser evil. There would have been no relationship with Gorbachev without the arms builup and the respect it demanded. Gorbachev would have acted just like Brezhnev if the Soviet economy had not been brought to its knees by Reagan.

Reagan started the arms race? Maybe Ephemeral_Life isn't the only person who should bone up on his history.

The soviets had been in the hole financially since the days of the race to the moon. Ever wonder why they never bothered to go there after we did? Couldn't afford it just to be an also-ran. You should be thankful that Gorbechev (sp) came along and stopped the madness. If a hardline soviet had come along, there would have been no reforms.

Read some more here. That was an inside joke. Satire would be a good word.

Ronald Reagan escalated the arms race beyond the means of the Soviet economy to compete. This had never been done before. The declared intent to research and implement SDI specifically sealed the fate of the Soviet Union. By the way, the Soviets never went to the moon after we did because there was no point in doing so. The race was over. The Soviet Union maintained a space program throughout the Reagan years. They built a space station after all. Attempts to minimize Reagan's responsibility for ending the Cold War and destroying the Soviet Union are mere revisionism and doomed to failure in the face of facts.
