Criterion's "For All Mankind" Question

I just received Criterion's absolutely outstanding For All Mankind and was floored by it. My family lived near Kennedy Space Center when I was young and we went to several shuttle launches. I have always loved the space program and this disc is just beautiful.

I do have one quick question... What is the purpose of the Color Bars segment on the disc? Am I missing something? I just don't quite understand what their purpose is.

Thanks for any info.

Zack

There's a color bars feature on all criterion dvds. For your viewing enjoyment.

It's for properly setting the black level, white level, color and tint on your television.

Much like the Video Essentials discs, it's all about calibrating your TV/monitor.

Ok, I feel kind of dumb asking but how do you use it to calibrate your TV? Do you just eyeball it until it looks right?
