RSDL dual-layer?

I see this as a feature for some Criterions.
Optimal image quality: RSDL dual-layer. Does this mean wide screen as well as full screen as viewing options?
I want to get Hopscotch, for instance, but don't have a TV for widescreen.
Thanks

No, it does not. It means the DVD has two layers of data, which doubles the amout of data it can hold. The disc can be mastered with less compression, so it can have better picture quality.

You do not need a widescreen TV to watch a widescreen DVD. I could go into this further, but you would be better off reading the FAQ at the top of the forum.

"RSDL" stands for "Reverse Spiral Dual Layer" so calling something "RSDL Dual Layer" is kinda redundant and is probably some marketing hack trying to sound technical.

At the ATM machine you have to put in your PIN number.

Reverse Spiral Dual Layer means the player reads the data from the middle of the disc, spiraling outward until it hits the layer switch, then reverses direction and spirals back inwards reading data from the second layer, providing a mostly seamless layer change.

If it wasn't reverse spiral then at the layer change the DVD player would have to go back and find the beginning again.

99.999% of dual layer discs are reverse spiral, the only one I know that isn't is the Bridge on the River Kwai LE, and that's why it has a horrendous (up to 15 seconds) layer change pause.

Don't worry, I grasped the basic fundamentals of that joke.

Pfft.

You all must not have scored very high on your SAT tests.

Thanks for the helpful replies. I've ordered Hopscotch in the meantime. RSDL and all.

Not quite true. There is no reason for a dual layer disc to be RSDL if there is no program material that spans the layer change. Many DVDs contain both widescreen and fullscreen presentations of a movie, each on its own layer. Since neither presentation spans the layer change, there is no need to make these discs RSDL. However, you are quite right that, if a movie does span the layer change, it would be an extraordinarily bad decision to not make the disc RSDL.

Ahhh...good point RoboDad.
