euro-western "The Great Silence" dvd going oop...

just a shout out concerning this personal fav going oop. I saw that it has been added to the updated list....effective today. there seems to be copies floating around....but have heard nothing about a new edition. might want to snag it now if it's been on your list.

Thanks for the notice. That has been on my wish list forever--hopefully my order gets through before it disappears.

Glad I have it. For anyone interested, DVDPlanet has several copies in store and I'm sure they have stock in their warehouse for on-line orders.

I'm a big fan of Fantoma (who released this), and think The Great Silence is an awesome spaghetti western -- one of the most memorable ever filmed, and better than the more famous Leone/Eastwood flicks. The snowy landscapes are beautifully shot while the town is impressively grubby. Trintignant's performance as Silence is incredible -- the man can express so much with his face -- and of course madman Klaus Kinski is a perfectly lunatic villain. There's also a great score by Ennio Morricone (thankfully, there's no awful Frankie Laine-ish title song like those that marred so many Italian/Spanish westerns). The dark ending is haunting and unforgettable.

This is my favorite Euro-western ever, even better than Corbucci's better-known Django. Highly recommended, and if it is going oop, better grab it quick.

Thanks gut for the heads-up!

It's been on my list for a while, so I just skipped over to DVD and put an order in.

This would seem ripe for Blue Underground to pick up the rights and re-release it. BU founder Bill Lustig is a big fan.

Yup, that's a great one, definitely memorable and unique. Looking forward to watching it again.

Got mine at digitaleyes back in Feb. '02. Just checked their site, and they show it as "out of print" also, another confirmation.

This may have something to do with Fantoma switching their distribution from Image to Rykodisc. Still, better safe than sorry so I ordered one while I could from DDD. I didn't get an out of stock message at checkout so I assume they have them in stock.

Thanks for the heads up!

I'm glad I ordered this from Amazon as soon as it was available.

But yeah, I've seen a few copies pop up in stores from time to time like Tower Records and Fry's.

The ending continues to amaze me.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been putting off picking this one up, but I guess I should grab it now, just in case. Great film!

But if this is a just a distributor change from Image to Ryko, then that may indicate a price drop is on the way.

that would be cool...this film deserves to be seen by more people. I would think that would help expose it to more future fans anyway. like chesola said I guess...better safe than sorry. if I see any price drop info...I'll chime in later.

Gut-

Speaking of OOP Spaghetti Westerns, do you have Vengeance (Image)? It's pretty good - nice transfer, but bare-bones.

I was too late. Bastards at DDD cancelled my order with no notification, too (it just disappeared). Hopefully, it comes out again (or I run across a copy somewhere).

Same here. Seems like copies are drying up fast. I ordered from Amazon yesterday & it says that it will ship in 11 to 13 days. I checked on it this morning & it says that I can't cancel because it is being prepped for shipment. Hope so because the only other online dealer I see that has it is Movies Unlimited. Figures that this title has been on my wishlist forever but I have been too lazy to pick it up.

Thanks Gut for lighting a fire under my a** so I could order it in time.

I tried Amazon yesterday too, but mine is still just sitting there in limbo. Hopefully that changes soon (I didn't figure there was any chance, but figured I'd try). I also wrote a complaint letter to DDD for cancelling without telling me--I can deal with them being out of stock, but the disappearing order thing is pretty weak.

Thanks for trying, Gut--my fault if I don't get it for being so cheap!
