Newbie help with creating a custom cover.
 

I read through all the stickies. I was thinking of making a replacement cover for Bend it like Beckham using the US poster art.

I have never made a cover and would appreciate if anyone couild point me in the right direction. Maybe some templates etc. Or how do you guys start with creating a new custom.

Also I found the poster art but the quality is not that great. IF anyone can help out with that, I would appreciate it.

I'm by no means a professional or even as good as anyone else on here, (I mean I use MS Paint to customize covers!), but I have made (well ok mostly just modified) a few covers. What I usually do is just download a scan of the original cover and replace the front with the poster art or change what I think needs changed, like I did changing the specs of the old Vacation releases to those of the newer releases. I did poster art covers for TMNT, Swamp Thing, and maybe a few more. What I do is download the best poster image I can find and open it up in MS Paint. Then I use the "stretch/skew" feature to enlarge the poster to the size of the front cover. I use cut and paste and pencil tools to clean it up as best I can and save it as a new image. Then I open up the original cover that I downloaded (300 dpi) and use the "paste from" feature to paste the poster over it. Bam, instant 300 dpi! (Sort of.) I know many people may find my methods strange and unusual, but hey, 4 of my covers made this way are up at dvdcoverart.com. I don't even want to begin to know (or pay for) how to use anything more complicated than MS Paint.

Yea, but how do you take say a title only from an image?

I don't know the "proper" way, but I would just use good ol' cut and paste, then use the coloring tools to erase anything around it, if need be.

Thank you marioxb for helping out. I don't mind using another graphics program such as Photoshop or something but I guess I am having a hard time finding a high quality poster image. Maybe I will try it with the one that I have and see how that looks.
