Is Howard the Duck on DVD?
I really like this movie is it coming on DVD anytime soon?
|
It is not on DVD.
Will it ever be released? Who knows. Anytime soon though? Not likely. Do a search and I'm sure you'll find more useful information than I'd be able to offer you. K |
I just watched it again on tv tonight. I can't believe it's not on DVD.
|
Seriously, if I ever meet George Lucas, as much as I'd like to talk about the OT, I think I'd let him know that Howard the Duck needs a nice DVD release.
|
and i'm sure he'd say -
"you're right. i'll release it right after I release the OT..." shame, really.. |
In a world where we can see Queen Kong and Sgt Pepper get DVD releases (these are not bad things, btw, lest anybody thinks I am dogging them!), I don't see why we can't have a Howard the Duck DVD. And considering other Lucasfilm releases have come out on DVD, I don't know what the hold up is for this one either.
|
lest the Luca"$"-bashing start..
I think it might have something to do with the "bad box office" and its pedigree as being one of the worst films ever, so George might not even be thinking twice about it.. being a proud owner of Sgt. Pepper's, I would love to see Howard released.. |
This movie needs the ultimate super dooper deluxe collectors criterion edition now!
|
And to think I thought I was alone in loving this movie and wanting it on DVD.
|
Why did so many people hate this movie!? I thought it was kind of cool.
|
It has a duck getting down with a woman. Why anyone would want this on DVD, to watch, ON PURPOSE, is beyond me.

That's like saying you shouldn't buy About Schmidt because you can see all of Kathy Bates' naughty bits... |
It wouldn't suprise me if Lucas considers this film like the original versions of the Trilogy-- it doesn't exist.

Well, I just finished watching a copy that I downloaded and I must say that if and when it gets released on DVD, I won't be buying it. I found it to be watchable, but that's about it. I had fond memories of it from when I was a teenager, but either I matured (hopefully not!) or I just realize now that there are so many better movies out there.
Sure, it does have some good points: the makeup on Jeffrey Jones is pretty well done, the stop-motion Overlord is cheesy but cool, Lea Thompson bounces around in string bikini panties, and the opening parody of our movies, magazines, etc. is neat. However, the good points don't make it a good movie, IMO. There was a recent thread on Garbage Pail Kids, wondering if and when it'll ever make it to DVD. That's another movie I would've bought if I hadn't had another chance to watch it. It, like Howard the Duck, does not stand the test of time. They are throwaway 80's movies that people remember from their youth. Take my advice: if you haven't seen either in a long time, rent (or download) before you buy them on DVD (if and when available). |
Am I the only one that thinks of the comic book (which the movie is based on) when this movie is brought up? Strangely enough, I've never even read the comic...
http://www.toonopedia.com/howard.htm http://www.adelaidecomicsandbooks.com/duck.htm Howard the Duck also had a pretty good theme song from what I remember. Looking it up on IMDB, Thomas Dolby worked on a number of songs for the soundtrack, so that figures. |
I loved the comic book as a kid (which might explain a thing or two - although I'm sure I didn't "get" half of it). Very 70's, anti-establishment stuff.
After college I sold my whole comic collection (around 1000), but kept my Howard the Duck comics. (oh, and a few ROM Spaceknight comics, too). |
IMO, Howard is a classic. This doesn’t come from some reminiscence of youth since when I first saw it I was likely older than most of y’all.
Note, I didn’t say great, just classic. I suppose one could compare it to Buckaroo Banzai, which ain’t everyone’s cup of tea, either. If it didn’t belong to Lucas, I’m sure it would have already been released. I’d bet a small, productive farm that it wouldn’t even be considered until after he’s dead. At which time, the only question I would have is: will it come with an insert? |
it must have been a disaster in Lucas' eyes. They even printed 70mm prints of this title.

It will probably be released after Lucas figures out how to redo the special effects and add Ewoks/Jar Jar clones.

Couldn't the answer to this thread just been "NO".....
He asked a question...the answer is NO. Simple. |
