Alpha Video ?
Sam's Club had this (wooden) box set of Alpha Video's Silent German Horror Movies. I think there was Nosferatu, The Golem, Wax Works (maybe) and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (sp?) for $14.99 +/-.
Would this be considered a good buy or a waste of money. Spend the $14.99 or put the cash towards Kino's boxset? I have just started to appreciate silent cinema, but have not seen any of these. I don't know anything about Alpha Video, but have heard that Kino is top notch. Thank You. Rick M. |
Alpha's DVD range from poor to quite good, with most falling in between. The color films tend to be worse. They do have nice pacakging, and for $4.99 each (at Fry's or from Alpha direct) they look as good or better than the old TV broadcasts of the films.
I'd hold out for the better versions of the silents though. Alpha's aren't the best. |

Thank you both for the input. I'll think I'm going to buy Kino's Nosferatu and see how it goes from there.

I have a couple of Alpha's, and I agree with Steve. The worst are literally unwatchable, while the best are quite good. It's a crap shoot. I have a friend who bought the Sams set, and he says it is horrible. I haven't seen it myself. I'd defiinetly save up for the Kino set. That's what I have, and it's great.
