Time Bandits 2-disc set coming Spring 2004

From the Anchor Bay website:

TIME BANDITS - Spring 2004

From director Terry Gilliam (12 MONKEYS, MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL) comes this fantasy adventure which is one of the most delighfully twisted of its kind. Featuring a brand-new DiviMax approved 16x9 widescreen transfer, this 2-Disc Set will include new interviews with Terry Gilliam and writer/star Michael Palin, trailers, screenplay, and a 60 minute Terry Gilliam career retrospective featuring interviews with the many actors from this director's eclectic years as a filmmaker. Closed Captioned For The Hearing Impaired.

Looks like a major improvement over the Criterion disc.

<i>"a 60 minute Terry Gilliam career retrospective featuring interviews with the many actors from this director's eclectic years as a filmmaker."</i>

I wonder if this is the same thing that's out on the AFI Director's Series DVD.

Awesome news!

Rogue588 08-28-03 01:59 PM

whoo hoo!

glad I didn't buy the criterion..

Jepthah 08-28-03 03:25 PM

Cool. :)

Will this version actually be an improvement over the Criterion edition? I have a list of Criterion dvd's I'd like to pick up and this is on there, but if this new set will be superior then forget it, I'll wait.

new interviews with Terry Gilliam and writer/star Michael Palin
This sounds like the interviews that were present as an extra on the Anchor Bay UK R2 edition of this film. That said, if the 60 minute doc on Gilliam is just the AFI doc, I'll be just holding onto the R2 disc.

Also, note that the specs for this upcoming AB disc make no mention of the Criterion commentary with Gilliam, Palin, Cleese, and others (which is present on the R2 disc, as well). If this new release doesn't have the commentary, the Criterion and the R2 discs will still be very much worth owning.

Unfortunately the Criterion is not anamorphic though still looks quite nice. I will be picking this up for the anamorphic transfer though.

Drexl 08-28-03 04:24 PM

Wow, it seems like only today that I made a comment about still waiting for a new anamorphic transfer of TB in another thread. How time flies! ;)

i was contemplating buying the r2, but i will just hold out for this. i love this movie! now i just want the adventures of baron munchausen to have a special edition!!!!

My thoughts exactly. I'm surprised it took this long for someone in the thread to mention it... that commentary is very, very good.

Im not buying it. You know why? Cause it doesnt say Criterion. I only buy Criterion.

mordecai 08-28-03 05:52 PM

Does this spell OPP for the Criterion?

No, this probably has no bearing on the status of Criterion's edition. Anchor Bay has already had a bare-bones edition that was in-print simultaneously with Criterion's. I assume these 2 can live together peacefully without the Criterion going OOP.

I knew I should have mentioned the sarcasm. I own only two criterions. Perhaps I was poking fun at the many forum members here who love criterion more than Jesus.

Criterion's great, but it's not all there is. Anyway, I have yet to see this film, and was researching which region dvd was better...... not sure if I want to wait till spring, unless i rent the video first.....

Good reference, thanks for the laugh Brian!

This is great news! I've already got the CC, but this'll make a good complement! And with the current trend of rereleased SE's, hopefully it'll come with a low (under $29.99 MSRP). ;)

The frustrating part isn't the typo, but the fact that I would have said the same thing if I saw someone else make it.

prince_of_saturn 08-29-03 04:43 AM

This again proves my point that Anchor Bay is the best kick ass DVD label out there, I always felt they are superiro to criterion, and again, they beat Criterion with their superiro extras!

Ejunior2 08-29-03 10:22 AM

A must buy for me. :)

DonnachaOne 08-29-03 12:02 PM

I'm surprised that AB didn't license the commentary, though I can see why Criterion wouldn't (the DVD is still in print, right?).

Criterion did license out the Halloween commentary from the laserdisc, not to mention the comm for Columbia's Holy Grail DVD, so I'm told.

Guess I'll have to pick this new version up, and have my cousin in England make a tape of the commentary for me.

Yes, they're tears of blood... of joy.

Excellent... Been wanting this title forever, but not in it's current non-anamorphic state. Sold.
