What was your first Widescreen purchase (DVD or VHS)
 

Apocalypse Now on VHS in Widescreen, probably around 1992 or 1993

I got into the game late with Saving Private Ryan Feb. '01.

Die Hard 2 on laserdisc (you know... the other white meat...)

I would say the Basic Instinct DC on VHS from the mid-90's. After that almost everything I bought on VHS was widescreen.

The Star Trek Films box set in 94 or 95. (VHS)

Star Wars Trilogy Box Set (VHS), I think that was 93!

I think it was Reservoir Dog or could be Star Wars also In VHS.

empire and jedi on the scifi channel on thanksgiving about 7 or 8 years ago.first widescreen vhs I bought was spawn the r rated dc. And all of my dvds (unless otherwise)are widescreen.

Bang Chow wa Zing on VHS

Jaws in 95 on VHS as that was the only version available at the time. My old copy was wearing out, so I bought the WS tape after never paying WS much attention. I knew there had to be a reason for letterboxing but at that time I had never given it any thought. When I watched the movie I saw things I had never seen in that movie before and suddenly it all made sense ;)

I was a late bloomer; I didn't learn about the joys of widescreen until DVD. The first DVD I ever bought, Pleasantville, was in widescreen. Of course, even then, I didn't yet know that that was better. :) I'd say that my first true widescreen purchase was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I think that was the first time I consciously avoided fullscreen, and held out for widescreen instead.

Jeez, can't quite remember! It was certainly a VHS. I think it was either Jurassic Park or Star Trek Generations. After widescreen VHSes began to be come a bit more common, I always waited for the widescreen release (if there was going to be one) before buying a film I really wanted. That meant mail order, special order at the video store or going to Suncoast, so I couldn't just walk into my local Kmart or Wal-Mart, but it was worth it to me.

The Matrix DVD in December 99, I really regret getting the P&S Star Wars SE back in 97, I thought (back then) that widescreen meant you lost a lot of the picture. Hey I was only 11 back then :)

The Guns of Navarone, followed by Blade Runner 'Directors Cut' both widescreen on my analog 32 inch Panny 1989.

Before I had a DVD Player... The Matrix on VHS. I didn't know what widescreen was. But I thought it looked cooler and more right. And I like being different. So I purchased to be the rebel I am! Fight the power!

I never bought many VHS tapes because I always just HATED tapes. I was too poor for laser discs in their day.

I started out with Widescreen when I bought a DVD player. I didn't have much of a choice since most DVDs were widescreen only in early 2000. Sad thing now is that people just now buying into DVDs have a choice on all newer movies so most pick fullscreen. In the early days of DVDs you were forced into Widescreen and most learned to love it or stick with VHS. I think that's the way it should be.

At first I didn't mind having the option as long as Widescreen was top priority. Now the Widescreen/Fullscreen versions are getting annoying. It's too easy to accidently pick up the Fullscreen, or have an online store ship you the Fullscreen version. What really annoys me the most is how stores like Wal-Mart, some Best Buys are stocking only the Fullscreen version of movies. If they even have the widescreen version, they usually have far less copies than the Fullscreen version. Wal-Mart is really getting bad about it, at least my Wal-Mart is.

I think it must have been Lawrence of Arabia on VHS, and I believe it was in 1988.
