My first Criterion was the red stripe Ghostbusters LD. I had it even before I had a laserdisc player, and I ponyed up a hundred bucks for the privlage.
I've still got it somewhere, I think. |
LD: Blade Runner
DVD: Seven Samurai |
The Royal Tenenbaums. I got it off of ebay for about $10 shipped. 2nd was Chasing Amy. I recently got Sisters, which I really like and Silence of the Lambs.
|
My first was Brazil - still probably the sweetest set I've got, with LOTR: Fellowship a very near second.
Now, if you're counting Voyager - the CD-ROM arm of Criterion - it was This Is Spinal Tap. Voyager made the best CD-ROMs for computers: Douglas Adams' Last Chance To See, Maus, The Day After Trinity, Ephemeral Films… man, I miss those. And with Spinal Tap on Criterion, I wish CC would could get the rights back. The newest release with the band characters doing a commentary is good, but nowhere near the commentary by the three actors, which can be funnier than the movie itself. |
Royal Tenenbaums, and Traffic shortly after.

And now, my Criterion Countdown, he said in his best radio voice...
1. Monty Python's Life Of Brian 2. Brazil 3. Do The Right Thing Those are them, for now... although I keep eyeing Sullivan's Travels and The Lady Eve and Notorious and and and and... |
Silence of the Lambs. I bought it before I even knew what Criterion was (this was before the SE of SOTL was released so it was the only version I could find). Now I know how lucky I was to find it since it was already OOP and how lucky I was that I didn't get ripped off with a bootleg (got it off half.com).

BRAZIL!! The second dvd I ever bought back in 1999.
|
Robocop. Also the first DVD I bought. How cool is that?
|
Silence of the Lambs and I recall that everytime friends stopped over, I always popped it in for the special features. If I could afford more, I would have the bulk of this awesome collection.
|
"Royal Tenenbaums"
I bought a "cheaper" dvd, didn't see the need to pay more for Criterion's until I actually owned one. Now, <sigh> I'm broke. |
