"Escape from New York": A TWO disc SE?? Details here..

http://www.fangoria.com/news_article.php?id=1356

"Video trade ads have revealed the details of the long-awaited special-edition two-DVD release of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, coming from MGM Home Video December 16. The set will include a brand new, high-definition transfer of the John Carpenter science-fiction thriller, with fresh 5.1 audio and a pair of audio commentaries (no details on who's on 'em, but presumably one will be the highly entertaining Carpenter/Kurt Russell track from the previous ESCAPE laserdisc). The second disc will contain what is likely the most anticipated extra: the full 10-minute deleted bank robbery scene (also with Carpenter/Russell commentary), along with a new featurette on the film and another on the SNAKE PLISSKEN CHRONICLES comic book, trailers, a photo gallery and more. The discs will come in a digipak with liner notes by Carpenter, plus a copy of a special-edition SNAKE PLISSKEN comic. All this for only $30!"

THIS IS COOL NEWS EXCEPT THE DIGIPACK. Why Digipacks, do they save the studios that much for type of package?

Numanoid 08-25-03 05:14 PM

"high-definition transfer"? What does that imply, exactly?

Adrenaline 08-25-03 05:45 PM

I wonder if the bank robbery sequence that sets up Snake's incarceration will be put back in the movie since the entire sequence is now restored? Branching, perhaps?

I hope so.

RichardW 08-25-03 06:25 PM

December is starting to look like another expensive month. Not that I'm complaining. :D

PalmerJoss 08-25-03 06:27 PM

Niiiice. And to think that just the other day I had the bare-bones edition in my hands wondering if I should buy it or not. I'm glad I didn't now.

LivingINClip 08-25-03 06:30 PM

Count me in!

I hope they do this too. From what I've seen of the sequence (on my old VHS special edition), it looks very cool. However, if it's not included via brancing, it's still great that they'll include the complete scene(s) instead of just clips. Awesome!

philo 08-25-03 07:09 PM

Excellent. I was just wondering about this release the other day. Glad to hear it's on schedule.

RyoHazuki 08-25-03 07:21 PM

I only saw the sequel. Im guessing this is better from all the praise its getting. I might pick this up as a blind buy.

Rammsteinfan 08-25-03 08:23 PM

Yippie! Bought darn time. I wish they would only go and do those SE's of They Live and Prince of Darkness instead of the bare bones...

Samuel 08-25-03 08:36 PM

Merry F'in Christmas! That cover is sweet.

In other words, probably the best video representation of the film ever.

When MGM does something well, it does it very well.

2003 just keeps getting more expensive. Good job MGM!

$30 seems kinda high, no?

is this the director's cut that was on vhs a few years back?

Rogue588 08-27-03 12:21 AM

$30 is the suggested retail price..we all know that Best Buy, Circuit City &/or Target will suggest it's less... ;)

Here's a look at the interior:

Oh...and, by the way -- the art in the comic book is great.

The VHS, despite being advertised as a director's edition, didn't have a director's cut of the film. That VHS just had some of the supplements from the SE laserdisc and a widescreen transfer. The theatrical version is the only cut of the film.
