hrm anyone else's chicago DVD not look widescreen?

I know for sure I bought the widescreen version from best buy, but because they open their own dvds before selling them to put in the antitheft device, i'm now wondering if they stuck in a full screen version by accident.

Is anyone else's widescreen copy have any of the normal horizontal black bars on screen that we get with any other widescreen dvd? I find it oddly strange that when I switch my widescreen tv to 4:3 mode, the picture still takes up the whole screen!

I don't think a P&S only version was released. You need to check your equipment (specifically 16:9 enhancements). The DVD is only 1.85:1.

There were two versions released, widescreen and fullscreen.

If you think you might have gotten the wrong one, take a look at the disc.
Mine says Widescreen.

I have the widescreen edition of this film and on the disc itself, on the left hand side, the word "widescreen" is printed. Perhaps you have a packaging error?

On the other hand, since the full screen version is open-matte, does this mean that you can see the dancers' feet, which are cut off in several scenes in the widescreen version? That would probably be the ONE bonus of seeing this film outside of it's intended widescreen.....

No, they don't. The antitheft devices are put in the case when the discs are packaged by the manufacturer. If you look at a wholesale supplier's catalog, the studio even gives you a choice of two different types of anti-theft device (Sensormatic is one, I forget the other).

My widescreen is definitely widescreen.

As was mentioned above, it could either be your player settings. Occasionally there's a mix-up on the manufacturer's part, and the wrong disc gets put in the case by mistake (Best Buy doesn't open the cases to put security tags in them, they're shipped that way from the manufacturer). This is extremely rare, but it happens.

If your case says widescreen, and your DVD player settings are correct, just take the movie back to Best Buy for an exchange.

Full-frame open-matte video releases almost never have visible boom microphones anymore, especially not on a title of this calibre. The studio hires digital effects artists to paint them out.

Do you have an old 4:3 TV (without vertical squeeze) that you can test it on? If it fills up the screen and doesn't look stretched, you got the wrong disc.

If you think you got the wrong version just go in and swap it out for the widescreen.

Also, I think this may be the first title Miramax has released a separate fullscreen version of. I can't remember any others.

I think the last one I saw was in American Beauty, though you are right that it doesn't happen too often anymore. (Only noticed since the Featurette is fullscreen.)

They wouldn't bother to paint out the microphone for a behind-the-scenes featurette. I guarantee you that the movie itself had no visible mics.

Did everyone miss this post? I don't have the disc nor have I seen it yet but if it is 1.85:1 AR then there will be no black bars on most TVs since overscan hides what little bars are there.

Well on most widescreen TVs, you mean. On 4:3 TVs there will definitely be black bars.

espionage,
Do the people look stretched horizontally on your widescreen TV when you have it set to 16:9? If so, you definitely got a fullscreen copy.

Well he did say he had a widescreen TV. So if his player is set correctly even with the TV in 4:3 mode with a player still set to 16:9 he wouldn't get bars but the picture would be distorted.
