Ever buy dvds you own for the new cover

I already own the 2 disc Cast Away but since fox re-released it with a totally different cover. I am really considering selling my old one and buying the new one just for the cover. Am I nuts? Does anyone here do this with their dvds?

matome 08-08-03 08:05 AM

Hell no.

TopHatCat64 08-08-03 08:09 AM

As much as I love good design (being a designer myself), I can't justify spending even MORE money just to have a new cover for the same exact disc content.

Yes..Pistachio's,Brazils,Pecans the whole lot :D

Each to their own but personally it's something i haven't, nor ever will resort to.

PixyJunket 08-08-03 08:27 AM

Not yet I haven't, I don't see my doing it.. but stranger things have happened so I can't discount the idea entirely.

DJ_Longfellow 08-08-03 08:36 AM

Well, I bought the Austin Powers Trilogy again for the keepcases, but I sold off my old ones already. ALSO, I got them during the Wal-Mart mix-up, so I think I actually made money on the deal. So I guess that was not really bad.

As for re-buying Cast-Away for a new cover....NO WAY!

BSTNFAN 08-08-03 08:36 AM

You say you'd sell the old copy. If you can get a decent price and the difference is minimal it might be worth it to you. How much is that new cover worth to you? That's really all that matters.

marty888 08-08-03 08:42 AM

Not something that would even enter my mind !

Cartload 08-08-03 08:48 AM

Negative.

My friend, you need to start investigating printing your own covers.

There are a few threads on dvd cover art that you should search on.

Yes Swiss Family Robinson since it was Disney I knew if the cover was good, so would the 2 disc set of Swiss Family Robinson.

Bluebomber 08-08-03 10:12 AM

Nope, really never crossed my mind

MisterHowie 08-08-03 10:19 AM

I haven't done it, but I have definitely been annoyed that a later (better) edition of a DVD has a worse cover. For me, that would be Swingers: Collector's Edition and The Whole Wide World. I had the Canadian version which has a nice cover, probably the poster art, but the US version that just came out is awful.

eedoon 08-08-03 10:57 AM

Nope. And yessir, you are a nuts. :D

BizRodian 08-08-03 11:31 AM

No, I'm I'm not going to lie and say it wouldn't influance my decision a small bit... if it wasn't for printing off your own covers that is.

pagansoul 08-08-03 12:00 PM

Not so much as cover art but I have been known to rebuy for a keep case when my origional was in a snapper. I hate snappers!!!!!!!!! :( yes, I am anal.

philo 08-08-03 03:58 PM

I wish I had that kind of money.

Printing your own is definitely the way to go, though I have yet to try it.

A guy gets a flat tire. He pulls to the side of the road by a large iron fence. He takes off the old tire and starts to put on the new one. He stumples on the wheel nuts and they all go down a water drain.

He starts to think about what to do. He thinks and thinks when finally he hears a voice from behind the fence. "I see your problem. What you need to do is take a wheel nut off of each of the other tires and use them on the fourth tire. That will get your far enough to get to a place where purchase replacement nuts."

The car owner thought about it and said "hey that's a pretty smart idea. Thanks." Then he looks at the fence and says "hey, isn't that the nut house?"

The guy replied, "Yeah. I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid."

If I don't like the Cover art I'll make my own or acquire different art from another person who has made alternate art.

You know, I'm considering getting a new copy of the Total Recall SE to get a keepcase to replace that stupid tin. It's less than $10, so I may do it. As for buying a new copy of something just for a different cover, no, I wouldn't do that.

AdamComic2 08-08-03 08:41 PM

I've rebought for a few piddley new special features, but I usually sell my old edition and don't lose a whole lot of money.

Ive bought them to get DVDs in a keep case rather than a snapper. Example, when Austin Powers was rereleased in keepcases when Goldmember came out and Best Buy had the free DVD if you bought the set...it was easily cheaper to buy the set and sell the two snappers I had and get Blade for free (even though in a snapper) than to buy Goldmember and Blade only. Im in the progress of "upgrading" my Friday movies, which by the time I sell my snappers off, I shouldnt be paying more than it would cost me to print covers out.

However, you are crazy for getting the new cover for CastAway. The one on the original release is more like the original poster art, and the new case is just ugly, especially with that new numbering they are doing...I dont want numbers when I have no intention of collecting them all, ESPECIALLY numbers that big (Criterion is exempt, besides, they keep their numbers small). Ill keep my original non-numbered cases, though I know eventually Fox is going to put X2 or some other big Fox release out with a number on the side.

mookiemeister 08-09-03 12:36 AM

No. There is no reason to buy a new DVD just for the cover unless you are a collector.

jekbrown 08-09-03 12:48 AM

if what I am getting to replace what I have is in box set form... then maybe... otherwise, no.
