City of God on DVD - unbelievable sound!

Have just finished watching City of God on DVD - rented from my local Blockbuster. It's not for sale over here (R2) for a couple more months.

The 5.1 sound is incredible.

It's nothing special until an hour 20 into the movie - then you will jump out of your SEAT when the rears kick in for what seems the first time with GUNSHOTS, GUNSHOTS, GUNSHOTS .....!

It rivals Saving Private Ryan - REALLY - all the more so because it surprised the bejeezus out of you. GREAT, GREAT sound effects ...

Oh, and by the way .. it's a cast-iron, solid-gold, take-no-prisoners BULLET of a movie too. Had heard about it, gave myself a quiet evening in and watched the heck out of it. Result: 10/10. Genuis at work!

Biggest movie thrill ride of recent years? Watch C.O.G at home, nice & loud, in a double bill with Amores Perros and you're just about there. And I don't speak Spanish OR Portuguese ...

Lucky bastard!

This was one of my favorite movies of last year. I can't wait to get it over here in the good old USA.

Was there any extra scenes on the DVD? I heard that Fernando Merielles (sp?) had a extra hour of footage, mostly dealing with the backstory of more characters. Hope there is a theatrical version along with a director's cut on the DVD when it hits here.

Hopefully we'll get similar treatment in R1... if that day ever comes.

This was my 2nd favorite film of 2002. Just incredible.

this movie was remarkable. hope the US gets a good, extra ladden treatment. Critics loved it and I think it did well, so I'm being optomistic. Irreversable seems to have gotten a great treamtment here in the states.

Thumbs up for time and money put into foreign film dvds

I don't know if I'll be able to wait for the R1, this movie is incredible and it sounds like the R2 has it together.

Folks, it's still a must-buy (movie, sound, transfer = all 10/10), but R2 City of God is light on extras ...

You get a 57-min docu on the real-life street scene in Rio, as seen thru the eyes of a cop and one or two others. It's an interesting documentary, but I'd have loved a Commentary, a Making Of, ANY deleted scenes and some biog info about the legendarily-amateur cast (who are all incredible).

So over to you guys States-side .. if you get the Extras, I'll be buying R1 and not R2 ...

Oh ... and Coral , what was your #1 film of 02, if COG was #2???

I'll add my voice to the chorus: CoG was by far the best movie I've seen in recent memory. EPIC crime drama. Just a thrilling movie. Can't wait for the disc!

My #1 went to Punch-Drunk Love... but City of God was a close 2nd - both of which I give a 10/10 (the only 2 films I gave perfect scores to last year).

Great movie, that movie blew me away the way Saving Private Ryan did years ago. Incredible film, i seen it in the movies 3x, and can't wait for the dvd release. Clearly the best movie in the last few years.
