I know who invented the term 'foley', but who invented anamorphic used in making DVD?

Many years ago I enquired about who was the person who foley artists, mixers, and walkers came from, I was told Jack Foley.

Who came up with anamorphic and why didn't they start using this process in 1997, when they started to sell DVD?

P.S. IMHO if they did there would be a lot less unhappy disc owners here.

"Anamorphic" is a standard term that not only predates DVD, it predates film. The first anamorphic lenses for film cameras date to the late 1920's. The etymology is ana (up) - morph (shape) - ic (of or relating to).

Many of Warner's 1997 releases were anamorphic, BTW. As for why so many transfers early on didn't take advantage of 16x9 enhancement: in many cases, it was a cost issue. Many of these movies had recently been released on Laserdisc, and the mentality was that these transfers were good enough to reuse on DVD. In other cases, there was concern about the comparatively shoddy quality of anamorphic downconversion in the first generation of players.
