Guzzlefish...only 10-digit UPC code?
 

I use DVDprofiler, but like this idea of statistics that Guzzlefish does. So I sign-up and then go to add my first DVD (which was the first DVD I bought).

Well look at that...it's not in their database. "That's fine," I say. I'll just submit the title. So I go to do that, and I apparently it says that the UPC code can only be 10 digits. Well this DVD that I have clearly has a UPC larger than 10. In DVDprofiler I even put in the UPC and it'll find it, because DVDprofiler apparently allows for UPCs larger than 10.

So now here I am, back to using DVDprofiler. Pretty silly of Guzzlefish. Oh well.

Try the 10 digits in the middle.

Yes, use only the 10 digits that are found underneath the bar code, not the one before or the one after.

I'm not sure why Guzzlefish decided to do it that way, as the first and last digits are technically meant to be part of the UPC number.

DVDProfiler uses the 10 digit upc codes also. (for R1 dvd's)

Do you have to fill in all of the information yourself? This is a bit of work if you have a collection of any size at all.

EDIT: Nevermind, I just figured it out.

Actually I believe the first and last numbers tell what category the product falls under. If you notice every DVD seems to start with a 7 or 0. (I have determined this by looking at around 10 DVD's so if I'm wrong, it's because I'm lazy.)

I exported the UPC codes for my collection from DVD Profiler and pasted them into Guzzlefish without a problem, so I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. Both DVD Profiler and Guzzlefish use the same UPC codes.

Ok, clearly I was misunderstood. Thus I will try to explain again. First, let me say, I am not an idiot. :) I realize that most of the time DVDProfiler and Guzzlefish only want the middle 10 digits for the UPC code.

The number I type into DVD profiler to add this particular title is 717985610174. Now count how many digits that is. It is 12. Go ahead, find it with profiler...you need all 12. This is not a region 1 DVD. But like I said, it's the first DVD that I bought, and I wanted to create a Guzzlefish account and start with my first title.

This DVD is not in Guzzlefish's systems. Therefore I was going to "Submit the Movie" so that it would be added to their systems. On the Submit Movie page, they ask for the UPC and ask for 10 digits.

So what am I to do?

It accepts more then just 10 digits. They changed it a few months ago, they just didnt update the info on the that page.

First part of the UPC is the prefix assigned to the releasing "studio" with the first digit specifying "format". The last digit is a "check-sum" to verify that the previous numbers were read correctly.

One may run into a few 13 digit codes (they are EAN codes "European Article Numbering" [also used in Japan] not UPC "Universal Product Code")

Why wouldn't you just enter the 10 digit (drop first and last number) and get on with it?
