Warner Home Video has announced the latest crop of classic films getting 2-disc treatments. Due on September 30th are The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and Yankee Doodle Dandy. WB will recreate the moviegoing experience of yesteryear with these new "Night at the Movies" special editions. These sets will include shorts, newsreels, cartoons, and trailers from the year of the films' initial release. The discs will be available individually at $26.99, or in a gift set at $69.92. Exact specs are as follows:
Remastered in the Ultra-Resolution digital video restoration, The Adventures of Robin Hood will include "Warner Bros' Night at the Movies 1938" (Angels with Dirty Faces theatrical trailer, a vintage newsreel, the Warner musical short subject "Freddie Rich and His Orchestra," and the cartoon "Katnip Kollege"). Other extras include a feature length commentary track by author and film historian Rudy Behlmer, a music-only track,trailers for 12 Errol Flynn movies, "Glorious Technicolor," a one-hour documentary about the color process narrated by Angela Lansbury; the 65th anniversary documentary "Welcome to Sherwood: The Story of The Adventures of Robin Hood"; "Rabbit Hood" and "Robin Hood Daffy" Looney Tunes; the short subjects "Cavalcade of Archery" and "The Cruise of the Zaca"; "Robin Hood Through the Ages" (a look at earlier screen adaptations); "A Journey to Sherwood Forest" (a collection of home movies and behind-the-scenes footage); outtakes and bloopers from Warner's 1938 productions; the Robin Hood National Radio Broadcast from May 11, 1938; composer Korngold’s piano lessons (audio only); and other material.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre will include "Warner Bros' Night at the Movies 1948" (Key Largo theatrical trailer, a vintage newsreel, the "So You Want to be a Detective" short, and the Looney Tunes short "Hot Cross Bunny"). Other extras include a commentary track with Bogart biographer Eric Lax and trailers for 12 Bogart films; "John Huston: The Man, the Movies, the Maverick" feature length documentary; "Discovering Treasure: The Story of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre"; the 1950 Looney Tunes short "8 Ball Bunny"; scoring sessions; the April 18, 1949 Lux Radio Theater broadcast of the story; and other material.

Yankee Doodle Dandy will include "Warner Bros' Night at the Movies 1942" (Casablanca theatrical trailer, a vintage newsreel, the short "Beyond the Line of Duty," and the Looney Tunes short "Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid"). Other extras include a commentary from Behlmer and trailers for seven Cagney films;"James Cagney: Top of the World" biographical tribute hosted by Michael J. Fox; "Let Freedom Sing!: The Story of Yankee Doodle Dandy" making-of documentary; the Looney Tunes shorts "Yankee Doodle Daffy" and "Yankee Doodle Bugs"; the wartime short "You, John Jones" starring Cagney and Greer Garson; audio-only outtakes and rehearsals; the Oct. 19, 1942, Lady Esther Screen Guild Theater Radio Show with the film's cast members; and other material.

I know what I'll be doing all October. And, a boxed set? Even better. This is certainly going to rank amongst the best DVD purchases of the year.

This may be a tad off topic, and certainly a stretch, but I think Criterion may be releasing a two-discer of Fellini's La Strada that month...they've confirmed in several emails that it was coming this year, and they've been working on La Strada for a few years now.

We'll probably be finding out Criterion's September lineup within the week, if not within this very day. I'm willing to bet that Criterion will serve up the Fassbinder box, Schizopolis, and either La Strada or Knife in the Water. As for Warner, I'm betting we'll see the second round of Chaplins in November, since ctober seems covred by the Lon Chaney collection. If Warner keeps this up, they'll certainly be challenging Criterion in the classic films department.

Cannot wait for Adventures of Robin Hood....... :)

Don't you own the pre-recorded Vhs video in the colorful box, at a cost of *only* $2 million dollars to film "The Adventures of Robin Hood"



Then we go to the 1950s and all the cheap black and white movies, that could have filmed in color, IMHO. They would be classics not in crappy black and white.

I knew Robin Hood was on the way but had no idea it would get the royal treatment. Wow!!

All three of these films (especially The Treasure of the Sierra Madre) are must-haves for me, and the specs look fantastic. And a great idea to release a lower-priced box set, too. Bravo, Warner!!!

These are packed Special Editions. I will be getting The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

I'll be getting TREASURE and ROBIN HOOD -- two great adventure classics! The extras for these sets sound fantastic! I can't wait (I know my father will be thrilled too!)

no question about picking up Robin Hood and Treasure... been waiting forever for these - never seen yankee doodle dandy but it's on the AFI 100 greatest films of all time list - how good is it?

I think Yankee Doodle Dandy is one of the most unabashedly patriotic movies ever to come out of Hollywood (since it came out in 1942--at the height of WWII--you can understand why). It is a biopic about George M. Cohan, who wrote and performed Broadway musicals and in Vaudeville in the early part of the last century. His most famous songs are "Give My Regards to Broadway", "Over There", and "Grand Old Flag". It has its corny moments, but it's very emjoyable.

Cagney's performance is brilliant--cocky and in-your-face (much like his gangster roles). There are a few people who think his (macho) tap-dancing is the best ever recorded on film.

I highly recommend this film (even if you don't like typical "musicals").

It looks like the WB Adventures of Robin Hood will have most of the same things that the Criterion Laserdisc had:

-feature length commentary track by author and film historian Rudy Behlmer
-a look at earlier screen adaptations
-outtakes and bloopers from Warner's 1938 productions
-composer Korngold’s piano lessons (audio only);

That is great . I always wanted to see the Criterion Laser Disc of
the Adventures of Robin Hood but I never owned a laser disc player. I believe the Criterion Edition cost over $100 and video stores did not rent laser disks anywhere near me .

Great! I'm especially looking forward to Treasure, but will probably get all three.

Haven't seen Yankee either. Love the other two. I might very well pick up the set, if I can find a deal on it. I like that "Night at the Movies" concept. Very cool idea. Extras for the set sound nice, but I sorta wish they could have gotten Angelica Huston to do an audio commentary for "Treasure", her insight would be fascinating.

Big :up: to WB. They are the one major studio that knows how valuable their old properties are and makes sure to do them up right.

Goddamn those are some sweet sets. I always thought that it would be keen to release some old news reels from the 30s and 40s.

Well, Treasure was a no-brainer for me as is Robin Hood - so I might as well go for the Hat Trick and get the boxed set.

Great news indeed!! My late Father always said that The Adventures of Robin Hood was when he first discovered girls when he fell in love with Olivia De Havilland ! I'm looking forward to the Technicolor documentary too.

Is House of Wax out yet? I wonder if Doctor X will ever make it onto DVD now that they're putting The Mystery of The Wax Museum out with House of Wax as an extra?

Its street date here in the States is Aug. 5. I didn't realize Mystery was on the disc as well till I looked at the cover close up. It seems to be quite the banner year for pre-1980 films making it to DVD.
