What are the "must own" horror DVDs?

In terms of either film quality or extras, which horror DVDs do you feel are essential to any DVD collection?

I'll be honest and just tell you I don't have many. I have the Jaws Anniversary, Final Destination, Scream Trilogy Box Set, Carrie: SE, and a few more that I don't totally consider horror like From Hell, Dark City, The Cell (so sue me, I like it), and then I have Seven and the entire series of the SOTL films.

What are some of your favorite horror DVDs?

Is the DVD for Phantasm or Hellraiser any good? I've really been thinking about checking them out. How about the Sleepaway Box Set?

I'm also thinking of picking up TCM: Premier Edition, Re-Animator: ME, and Night of the Living Dead:ME. I just want more suggestions, and also am simply currious about what you guys have to say.

Mutley Hyde 06-28-03 12:26 AM

Maniac :D
Nosferatu
Hunchback of Notre Dame (Chaney)
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Frederich March version, although the bastid's NOT on dvd yet  )
M
Frankenstein
Bride of Frankenstein
The Wolf Man
The Invisible Man
Dracula (okay, yeah, it's boring, but I have to throw it in, because the dvd is a great package, and it really is a good movie is you're wide awake)
Psycho
The Birds
Horror of Dracula
Curse of Frankenstein
Exorcist
Omen
Rosemary's Baby
Halloween double disc set from Anchor Bay
Suspiria and Opera SEs
Silence of the Lambs
Sleepy Hollow
The Others
From Hell

Just a few off the top of my head. There are so many though.

SideShow 06-28-03 12:37 AM

Night of the Living Dead ME, The Re-Animator 2 discer, Rosemary's Baby, the special edition of The Exorcist, The Omen, most of the Dario Argento Anchor Bay titles (my personal faves are Opera, Deep Red and Suspiria) The Beyond, The Fog, Evil Dead: Book of the Dead, Evil Dead 2 Special Edition and Army of Darkness: Boomstick edition, and the Universal Classic Monster special editions if you can find them. The Nightmare on Elm Street box is pretty nice too, if you like the sequels at all.

The Sleepaway Camp box is great

Mark222 06-28-03 02:21 AM

I agree with most of the dvd's above.

Also:
Return of the Living Dead
Wicker Man
The Ring & Ring U
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Fly I & II Double Feature
The Thing
The Shining
Halloween 25th Ann. that comes out 8/05/03

Azrael23 06-28-03 06:36 AM

For Western Horror i'd suggest :
- Hellraiser 1-3 (it just gets tedious after that)
- Phantasm Series
- 28 Days Later (R2)
- The Thing
- Omen Trilogy
- Lord of Illusions
- Event Horizon
- American Werewolf
- Demons I & II
- Nightbreed
- Halloween
- Candyman
- Pet Semetary

You also might want to consider some Japanese/Korean movies.
- The Eye
- The Phone
- Audition
- Ringu / Ringu 2 / Ringu 0
- Dark Water

You can pick these up cheap from places loke dddhouse etc, and they are all fully subtitled.

that's pretty much The Exorcist 25th anniversary edition. the film and the documentary is both superb.

thats a loaded question for me....I say every horror title in my collection is essential.

if you have no Mario Bava in your library, then you have alot of work to do:D. please get Black Sunday, as it is a masterpiece of cinema....and should be a cornerstone of everyones collection. I'm also fond of both Nekromantik films. but really, to list them all would take me hours...just check the collection link and my Bava link.

Julie Walker 06-28-03 11:47 PM

Wow...all the ones i would have mentioned have been!

Hmm..so lets see what i have left in my collection thats not on anyones list yet.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers original & '78 version.

The Toxic Avenger:Unrated...& Citizen Toxie:T.A. IV:Unrated are classics of the camp genre. The other two sequels are pretty sucky. Yet if you want to pick up the box(1-3) set,go ahead!

Brain Damage

Society..twisted dark comedy with a very nasty gooie ending.

Creepshow

The Crazies

Martin(Romero)

Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde

Dressed to Kill(1980)..awsome SE of a excellent film.

Maximum Overdrive..crap,but pretty fun crap in a bad movie sort of way.

Humanoids from the Deep..terrific cheesy monster film thats actually pretty scary despite the campy nature of the FX.

Friday the 13th part VI:Jason Lives..classic of the horror-comedy..& the best sequel in the series. A masterpiece. Though with rumored SE's comming. May be best to wait, just in case they happen to be uncensored(lots of gore heavily censored in this film).

The Howling..wait for the SE this August. Classic werewolf film loaded with dark humor, wicked FX,a hot Elizabeth Brooks in the nude..& just a whole lot of fun.

Also check out Joe Dantes Piranha for more wicked campy cheesy, but oh so much fun & thrilling monster movie bash.

Oh yeah..the Anchborbay dvds of Hellraiser 1 & 2 are excellent. You can get them either in a double feature pack or seperately. The DF pack would be cheaper. Can find it for $20 at Best Buy. Which is basically full retail for one film..& thus saving $$ by getting more bang for your buck!

All the other horror films i have in my collection have already been mentioned. I myself need to see some Bava though, among many others!

tasha99 06-29-03 01:15 AM

The only horror movies I own are Suspiria and The Devil's Backbone (Spanish). Both are excellent films, and I'd put The Devil's Backbone in my top 5 of any genre.

Some horror movies I liked are (stars mean I liked them more than unstarred ones):

The Changeling*
Burnt Offerings*
The Audition (Japanese)
The Evil Dead movies (tongue in cheek and funny. I liked Army of Darkness* the best.)
Ravenous* (funny horror)
Frailty
The Gift
La Residencia (only dvd is Spanish with no subtitles)*
Psycho*
Stir of Echos
The Sixth Sense
Nightbreed*
Carrie
The Shining
The Others
The Wicker Man
The Thing
Hellraiser 1&2

Netflix classified Donnie Darko as horror, but I wouldn't call it that. It's got some creepy moments though, and I thought it was excellent.

Peter Jackson's Bad Taste is a funny gore film. As for the question as to Phantasm being any good, it is most definitely recommended, especially considering that you can get it for under $10. The picture is solid albeit not anamorphic and the extras are quite good.

markdclark43016 06-30-03 12:59 PM

Good luck getting a consensus on this one! I own a few hundred horror and sci fi DVDs, mostly classics. The ones I would recommend starting with include...

FRANKENSTEIN - The best of the Universal horrors, and by far the best of the SE DVDs. THE WOLF MAN and THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON are also excellent SEs.

BLACK SUNDAY - Terrific Mario Bava chiller and an amazing DVD. VCI's THE WHIP AND THE BODY and BLOOD AND BLACK LACE are other very nice Bava discs.

CARNIVAL OF SOULS (Criterion) - The final word on one of the most delightfully eerie low-budget horrors of the 1960s. An amazing 2-disc set; maybe the best horror DVD yet released. Criterion's THE BLOB is also spectacular, but the film isn't as satisying as this SOULS.

HORROR OF DRACULA - Gotta have some Hammer, and this is the best film they ever made. Nice print quality but bare-bones DVD. REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN is also a must. The Anchor Bay discs are better packages, but contain weaker films.

The Image NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is superb, as are nearly all the various Anchor Bay HALLOWEEN DVDs. (You can safely skip the TV version, though, unless you're a huge fan.)

Oh, and nearly all of the MIDNIGHT MOVIES discs are a great bargain for the price. I would especially recommend the MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH/PREMATURE BURIAL disc. Great prints of great movies and interviews with Corman about each film. All for less than 10 bucks at most locations.

These recommendations come off the top of my head. With more thought, I could compile a more comprehensive list of suggestions. But I don't have time right now, sorry.

Is "The Wolf Man" with Lon Channey, Jr. still in production? I can't find it anywhere. This was a childhood favorite!

M

always creeps me out. the whole subject is true and real horror.

mvc 07-01-03 03:40 AM

Hrmm, I'm not even a horror fan, but I bought a bunch of horror movies only because they were limited tins from AB. Oh well, I discovered some cool gems like Wicker Man. Damn that limited stuff. Always gets me. :X

mikenyc 07-01-03 07:11 AM

I picked up a cheapo edition of "Indestructible Man" this weekend at an outlet mall, on the "Alpha" label. Lon Chaney Jr.

Kind of funny, with lots of cheap special efx, in a "The Bat" sort of way.
