Need Info on "Crumb" and "Grey Gardens"

I am on the verge of ordering the cult documentaries "Crumb" and "Grey Gardens" from DDD.

I have read that the "Crumb" transfer is terrible and is also of the dreaded "Formatted to Fit Your TV" type, despite the film being billed as widescreen.

Does anyone have any info regarding a possible re-release of "Crumb," with a new transfer? The disc was released back in 1999, so it would seem about time for another attempt.

"Grey Gardens" is Criterion, so I know that will be just fine to order at the moment.

I highly doubt Crumb will have another release. There isn't enought sale potential for CTHE to give the dvd better treatment.

Grey Gardens by Criterion is a great disc so you will not go wrong there.

What I don't understand about the Crumb transfer is that it is a David Lynch produced documentary. With David Lynch's clout and insistance on things being a certain way, I am surprised he didn't step in and insist on OAR here. Even though the film is in full screen on DVD, it is worth owning. It was among the first four DVDs I ordered after I bought my player, and it's probably the most watched DVD in my collection.

I'd suggest renting Crumb first so you can decide for yourself. As for Grey Gardens, it is a haunting and weirdly wonderful experience.

Thanks for the info everyone.

Another cult documentary that I plan on buying is the incredible "Brother's Keeper," which is out on 7/29. Hopefully that will get a top-drawer treatment.

Take it for what you will, but IMDB says the OAR is 1.37:1. I don't think you'd want this one matted. So much of the film is his art. Why matte that out of the picture.
