Who does the commentary I wonder...

boston george 06-16-03 05:16 AM

Holy Jesus does this make me happy! I've been waiting forever for a good version of this film to be available.

Nice to see we are getting good Python disks

PalmerJoss 06-16-03 11:10 AM

I've been waiting for what seems like forever for a SE of Meaning Of Life--it's about frickin' time!

The Nature Boy 06-16-03 11:15 AM

I would like to hear a sincere and frank commentary, because undestandibly, mosty Pythons don't consider this their finest hour. But I do think the accountant pirate sequence is nearly worth the price alone as one of th finest things filmed in the 80's. I guess all that would be left after this is "Monty Python: Live at the Hollywood Bowl" which is merely a live rendetion of their television show, featuring mostly classic sketches. But nonetheless, it's hilarious and definately worthy of at least a barebones release.

Sessa17 06-16-03 11:29 AM

Wow! Python w/ a DTS track. This can't come soon enough.

Its already out. Came out about two years ago. Check out the Monty Python Live 2 disc set. Its on there, along with their HBO Aspen reunion special, and a bunch of other specials that have aired over the years.

Iron Chef 06-16-03 11:59 AM

We have to go - um - I'm having rather heavy period.

Geofferson 06-16-03 12:33 PM

As Wallet Boy says, it's already out as part of the 2-disc 'live' set:

I do consider it their finest hour. It's their best stuff since the TV show.

I hope this disc has full participation from Terry Gilliam and has lots of features on The Crimson Permanant Asurance

[Large corporate boardroom filled with suited executives]
Exec #1: Item six on the agenda: "The Meaning of Life" Now uh, Harry, you've had some thoughts on this.
Exec #2: Yeah, I've had a team working on this over the past few weeks, and what we've come up with can be reduced to two fundamental concepts. One: People aren't wearing enough hats. Two: Matter is energy. In the universe there are many energy fields which we cannot normally perceive. Some energies have a spiritual source which act upon a person's soul. However, this "soul" does not exist ab initio as orthodox Christianity teaches; it has to be brought into existence by a process of guided self-observation. However, this is rarely achieved owing to man's unique ability to be distracted from spiritual matters by everyday trivia.
Exec #3: What was that about hats again?
Exec #2: Oh, Uh... people aren't wearing enough.
Exec #1: Is this true?
Exec #4: Certainly. Hat sales have increased but not pari passu, as our research...
Exec #3: [Interrupting] "Not wearing enough"? enough for what purpose?
Exec #5: Can I just ask, with reference to your second point, when you say souls don't develop because people become distracted...
[looking out window]
Exec #5: Has anyone noticed that building there before?

SCHMEGGA 06-16-03 03:33 PM

I have never seen this, but have always heard how good it is. I am thinking about getting a new 50" HDTV in August so this will fit right in there.

"But sir, tis only Wafer Thin...."

This is fantastically wonderfully great news.

I don't know if I would say that about the whole film.....but personally I think the Every Sperm Is Sacred skit might be the best Python skit ever........an amazing show-stopping musical number that nicely parodies Oliver! and probably has the highest production values of anything Python has ever done.

joshd2012 06-16-03 05:45 PM

Best news ever! Not my favorite Python movie, but still a great one. Any mention about the short that was in front of this in the original DVD... I can't think of the name right now, but something to do with insurance. It would truely suck for anyone without the original to not have that great short.

It'll be there... it's part of the movie itself (as it comes back into play later in the film).

DonnachaOne 06-16-03 11:39 PM

Thank you, Justin.

"Every Sperm Is Sacred" will sound deadly in DTS surround...

Well, yeah, that first list of features is from the two-disc "Holy Grail" DVD, not "Meaning of Life."

evenswr 08-19-03 07:31 AM

From The Daily Llama:

Disc 1

Monty Python's The Meaning of Life - the original film, from a new high definition master and Dolby 5.1 soundtrack
Prologue by Eric Idle - the original poem that Eric wrote to Universal, which was all that was needed to secure funding, is performed in person for the first time
Director's cut - see the film with three deleted scenes reinserted into the film
Audio commentary track - features great commentary and banter from Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam
"Soundtrack for the Lonely" - Michael Palin's hilarious soundtrack for people watching the DVD at home alone

Disc 2

The Meaning of Making The Meaning of Life - a new 50 minute film featuring historical as well as brand new interviews with the Pythons, original electronic press kit materials, footage from the Cannes film festival, and behind-the-scenes clips
Education Tips - a totally new sketch written by Michael Palin and John Cleese and performed by Cleese, Palin, and Terry Jones
Un Film de John Cleese - a new trailer for the film edited by John Cleese
Re-Mastering a Masterpiece - a hilarious video documentary about how the print for Meaning of Life was restored
Song & Dance - an in-depth look at some of the musical numbers from the film, including interviews with Terry Jones, famed choreographer Arlene Philips, and dancer Jane Leeves (now known for her role as Daphne on NBC's Frasier)
Songs Unsung - actual alternative versions of some of the songs from the film, performed in person by the Pythons who wrote them
Selling the Meaning of Life - the original trailer, television and radio spots, including the first-ever and slightly-unsuccessful "advertisement by telepathy"
Deleted Scenes - the scenes that didn't make it (some with commentaries)
Virtual Reunion - how do you get all of the Pythons together for a reunion?
What Fish Think - turn your television into a virtual fish tank, Python style
DVD-ROM features - includes the whole screenplay, the script for several scenes that were never filmed, the sheet music to many of the film's songs, and Mr. Creosote's The Joy of Fat recipes
Visit the official website for the DVD set for more information (www.montypythondvd.com).

evenswr 08-19-03 12:54 PM

Anybody know what the three deleted scenes are? I would assume that one of them is the Martin Luther sketch that you could see if you got to a certain point in the Meaning of Life video game, but I don't think I know of any others that were cut from this movie...
