Is my Scarface DVD legit or not?

O.K. I've searched a bunch of threads, with a lot of people asking about their copies of Scarface, and whether they're legit or not. Trouble is, there don't seem to be any pictures to go by, or anything truly descriptive to allow anyone to draw any real conclusions. Here's my situation:

I just bought a copy of Scarface from an eBay Buy It Now auction. It says "Collector's Edition" on the spine, it has "dts DIGITAL SURROUND SOUND" at the top of the front, and below that it says "widescreen version" in a gray stripe. Also on the front there is a small, round hologram sticker that says "THX Superbit DTS Original" around the border of the sticker, and inside the border it has the DVD Video logo with a number 9 below that. It does confirm region 1 capability on the back, and therefore plays just fine for me.

There's no insert inside the case. The disc has the same picture as on the front of the case, making it a non-double-sided disc, as I've read that some other people got. The playback picture isn't the absolute best, but it looks ok, and it is anamorphic, as stated. The sound which claims to be dts doesn't really sound all that great, as there is constant sound coming from all of the speakers of my surround sound system. It just sounds like regular stereo. The only other thing I could find wrong is a couple mis-spellings on the back of the case, which says "(c) 2000 Layout and Design Columbia Tristar Hoem Video. All rights Reserved. WARNING: For private home use only. Unauthorized public performance, broadcasting or copying is a violantion of applicable laws. Dolby and the Double-D symbol are trademarks of Dolby Laboratories."

Based on all this, is my copy legit? Thanks in advance for the information.

You have a bootleg. There are like 80 different giveaways in your description, including the DVD-9 logo (almost no legit DVDs have this), the lack of an insert, the misspellings, etc.

The actual DVD does not have DTS sound. SuperBit is a trademark of Columbia DVDs (not Universal), etc. etc. etc.

Here is what the actual cover looks like:

Nope, you've got a bootleg.

(bboisvert just beat me to it)

I am gonna have to disagree. Many Hong Kong releases have DVD-9 on the cover (as well as no inserts which is quite common)..but of course, as far as Region 1 releases, you are right on. A simple search of dvdpricesearch.com can tell you what Scarface has on it...and DTS is not one of them.

If the price was okay then the quality compares to the studio release which was subpar. At least you can watch it.

Easy way to tell - are its parents married?

Serious answer - no. The DTS is the first dead giveaway.

Bootleg or not, I hope you didn't pay too much since the 20th Anniversary SE will be released September 9th.

that's about the dvd-9 topic. there are pirate dvd-9's out there. but funny thing is....they just almost just as much as the legit disc so why bother?
