DTS/Superbit
 

I'm sure this has been answered before, but I'm new to this great forum. Please forgive me.

But what exactly does DTS do for a movie? I've got Saving Ryan's Privates on DVD ;), but mine's not DTS. Is it really that much better?

Also, what about Superbit? Is this similar to DTS, or something new entirely?

If this is in a FAQ, a link would be appreciated. Moderator, I apologize if I'm wasting bandwidth, but this site rocks!

DTS=Digital Theater SOund. It is a much better sound format thatn Dolby Digital. A wider range, more bass, overall usually better. It has a higher bit rate recording and encoding. It is a Digital Sound format, as long as yrou reciever and DVD player support it. Superbit is a DVD that has the highest quality Video and Sound. NO Extras on the disk that the movie is on. Most People do not have TVs that good enough to really tell the difference in the Superbit and no superbit. But so do. DTS is included on all superbit DVDs cause it is the premier sound. The saving Private Ryan DVD in DTS is amazing. The best sounding DVDin DTS usually, that and LOTR.

DTS can be better, yes, but it isn't always a guarantee. Note the two recent releases of MIB and MIBII Superbit in which the DD track is far superior.

This is why I said overall usually better. There are a few instances, but most of us on here when a DVD comes out that a version has DD and then a version has DTS, like Road to Perdition, most of us on here buy the DTS version

They dropped the word system to just have 3 low cap letters dts, Superbits are recorded at higher bit rates, which stops them for putting extras on PQ price for the superbit.

Every DTS-ES (either 5.1 or 6.1) soundtrack I've ever heard always sounds better than it's DD counterpart.

The glossary in the Frequent Topics thread stickied to the top of the forum defines DTS and has a link to a sizeable interview with a DTS muckety-muck. I'd recommend skimming that thread, because it probably answers some questions you didn't even realize you had yet.

www.superbitdvd.com seems like a good place to go for information on Superbit DVDs. I get the feeling that DVD Talkers are divided between thinking of Superbits as a new standard for video and audio or just an excuse to get away with barebones DVDs.
