NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO, Gladiator to become 1 disc only!

whats up dreamworks
thedigitalbits.com
Also, we have information you fans of director Ridley Scott should heed ASAP. DreamWorks is going to soon re-issue Gladiator as a single-disc edition... meaning that the excellent DVD special edition is going to disappear from store shelves. So if you don't have it already, get a copy while you still can.

Can I infer from your obnoxiously long spelling of the word "no" that you are upset by this matter?

Just don't buy the damn thing.

Actually go out and buy the the two-disc. Hell go out and buy a couple of extras so you can sell them on eBay when they go out of print.

I don't understand why you are so upset. If you are a big fan of the movie you already have the 2 disc set.

Big deal .... not unexpected really .... simply add it to the growing list of 2-disc sets that have morphed into single-disc after being on the market for a while.

It's pretty safe to say everyone and their grandma already has this movie, and those few people that don't will probably either buy it now before it goes out of print, or not buy it ever so I really don't think this hurts anything.

Correctamundo... Ditto Fight Club when it went the one disc route... Don't own either, have no interest in owning either... So... < We need a smiley for this.

Yeah, I think anyone who wants this movie has it by now. Most 2 disc movies will eventually be re-released as 1 disc not so special editions. No big deal. If you want it, buy it while it's 2 disc. 1 disc Fight Club has been out awhile, and it's still very possible to find the 2 disc version. They don't scoop them off the shelves and drop them in the ocean or anything.

I'll buck the trend and say I almost always think it's a bad thing when a 2-disk set is replaced with one (relatively bare-bones) disk. I guess it's ok if they have both available as a choice, but I really hate seeing the quality go down over time (I have had this movie for a long time, btw, but more people get into DVD all the time, and it's too bad if they don't have a choice).

Couldn't agree more. Thanks for the heads up. I have the two-disc, but like someone else said - when Fight Club, Sound of Music, and Lawrence of Arabia went down to one disc people were scrambling all over the place.

It's good to know these things people - I'll be telling my friends who don't own this, but might be interested.

It makes sense to me to replace a high selling DVD with a single disc. By this logic, most people who wanted the double disc will have it, and by cutting down to a lower priced single disc (such as the cheaper fight club) you open the movie up to a less involved, less willing to spend money crowd. I mean, it's not like the movie was avaiable for a short time. No big deal to me really.

Also, the movie had a pretty sizable production run. I imagine you should be able to find new and used copies for years. I still can find the 2 disc Fight Club in my local used DVD shops.

How things have changed, we used to all bemoan when Fox would do this, now it's no big deal because we all have it? While this did sell a ton of copies, and there should be plenty available, this stinks for someone who discovers this movie a few years down the road. Sure it's been available for three years, but in the grand scheme of things, that's not very long. Imagine if the only copies of "Gone With the Wind"(the book) still available were the ones printed in the first three years of release.

The DVD market is growing by leaps and bounds every year, there will be millions of new buyers for Gladiator. Should they be penalized because they're slow to jump on a trend?

I thought it was smart for Fox, and a smart move here. The book comment doesn't really hold here as you can still buy the movie. Just without all the extra features. Nothing is stoping you from enjoying what actually counts, the actual film. And if the movie is released at a lower price, ~15 dollars like the Fox films, then its great.

Yes it may hurt future DVD collectors who want the best in their collection, but the movie is still going to be available, and that's whats important.

So what??? What are you all crying about? Just go out and get the 2-disc set if you don't want to get the single disc. I don't see what all this fuss is about. It just blows my mind.
