ER Box Set (Season One) Announced

It's impossible to search for "ER Box Set", so I hope this hasn't been covered exhaustively...

Quote taken from Dvdfile.com:
"Up next is an announcement highly anticipated by many, ER: The Complete First Season. This box set will hit stores on August 26th, and features all 25 episodes from the first season, including the 90-minute pilot. Billed as "one of the most comprehensive and extensive television DVDs ever released," each episode is presented in their original 4:3 full screen aspect ratio (the show didn't go 16x9 until later seasons) and Dolby 2.0 surround. Extras include "The First Year Intern Handbook," an interactive feature containing complete character profiles, 45 "patient" histories of the various guest stars that have appeared on ER and a medical terminology glossary, two audio commentary tracks on the pilot episode, one from Michael Crichton and John Wells and another from pilot director Rod Holcomb and key production crew, additional key production crew and director commentaries on the powerful "Love's Labor Lost" episode directed by Mimi Leder and "Sleepless in Chicago," directed by Christopher Chulack, two featurettes about the medical consultants and writers who created the show's trademark realism and the series' post-production process), outtakes and unreleased scenes and even more hidden bonus materials. Retail is $59.95 for the whole box, although according to the press release, this is only going to be a four-disc set, which seems awfully packed given the show's hour-long format and all the extras. We'll certainly review this one when we get it, and let's hope the quality doesn't suffer...stay tuned."

No Abby Drama for about 8 more seasons! :) Thank God.

59.95 is a great price. That means we can probably score it for around $40-$45ish on preorders and the first week. Great news!

Any dvd experts out there??

Is it possible to squeeze 25 episdoes on 4 discs without butchering the picture quality. Other than that this sound like a great set!

Cheers!

If they're DVD-18s like the Japanese DVDs, then yes, with no problem.

If they're DVD-9s, then squeezing ~5 hours of episodes + extra content = impossible. They'll probably do 4 episodes per side.

The set from Japan does utilize the DVD-18s like you've stated and the set is still 7 DVDs (only disc 1 in the set does not use both sides of the DVD).

I can't see how the US release is going to be only 4 DVD's? Although 4 episode per side would seem to work like you suggested. Wonder why Japan only put 2 episodes on each side?

I am hoping the 4 disc was a typo or an error. I am looking forward to this set. I start watching Er from the beginning when I was ten and my mom and dad let me stay up late and watch it brings back fond memories.

She's par at best. Sorry.

And her character is like television suicide.

Will buy this on day of release. Can't wait.

They may be able to do this if they're using DVD-14's. It was reported a while back that the DVD industry wanted to use these DVDs instead of DVD-9's which are currently in mass use.

I watched this faithfully the first couple of seasons when it was all about the "ER." After that it started getting way too "soapy" for my tastes and I never watched it again. I think this is why CSI has been so popular with me; they stay outta all that muck. At least for now.

Dang. I've been able to avoid a lot of the newer TV sets, with most of the Fox & HBO stuff eating my budget--but this isn't likely going to be something I can ignore.
