Once Were Warriors coming 8/4/03!!

From DVDFile.com:
Rounding out the pack is the acclaimed Lee Tamahori drama Once Were Warriors, and The Ballad of Little Jo, starring Mrs. James Cameron, Suzi Amis. Both are making their DVD debuts, and feature anamorphic widescreen transfers, Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 surround remixes, and trailers. Retail is $19.95.
New Line is releasing this August 4th. Finally, a quality R1 version of this excellent film! Can't wait!

Great! Everyone tells me how great this movie is but I haven't seen it because there hasn't been a proper 1.85:1 release of it anywhere! Sounds like New Line are doing it right

Didn't the director do a commentary for the Criterion LD? Too bad New Line couldn't get their hands on it.

Just as a side note, the audio commentary (as well as several other extras) is available on the Korean DVD (R0 NTSC). Unfortunately, the film print on that DVD is full screen.

The Australian DVD is the one to pick up, widescreen with commentary and it only costs around $8.

It's not the OAR - it's cut at the sides to make it 1.66:1. The OAR is 1.85:1

The extras are better on the R-4 release, no doubt about it. However, that release is a 1.66:1 non-anamorphic release. The R-1 anamorphic transfer will be much closer to the film's original 1.85:1 OAR.

Excellent film.....and one of the most emotionally draining I have ever seen.

Also glad to see "The Ballad of Little Jo" finally being released on DVD. Suzi Amis gives a strong performance.

I'll pick this up but I guess I'm keeping my Criterion LD for the commentary. BTW, I picked up the R4 version of the sequel and was very disappointed by it. It doesn't hold up to the original at all but it was good seeing the actors reprise their roles.

Anyone got definite specs for this?

All the retailers I've looked at online have empty specs

Just wanna be 100% it's anamorphic and OAR before I shell out

Brilliant! Thank you!

DTS too huh?

I do read a lot of DVDTalk reviews - honestly (mostly because DVD-Basen links to them), but it just didn't occur to me that you'd have a review of this one yet

Thanks again. Can order with confidence now

It's now in the hands of a R4 deluxe release to add the original OAR and anamorphic transfer!
