Why does Man Bites Dog - Criterion DVD have 2 covers?
 

I noticed that this Criterion has 2 different covers. Actually, the covers are the same, but the titles are done differently. One has the film title and stars names in the top right corner right under the Criterion Title. The other one Ive seen has the title in huge letters on the bottom left corner of the cover. Whats up with that?

And to those who have this DVD, what are your opinions on the movie?

I thought you might've meant two covers, literally. My copy of Straw Dogs came with two covers: one tucked in behind the other, almost like a back-up copy or something. :lol:

Well the one i saw in stores was the original uncut coverart.

Since you mention the alternate one with the title in the lower right corner. My guess is to obscure the shot of blood splattering with a babies passifier into the air?


I like the original uncut poster which was basically 'banned' in most countries. Pretty edgey,twisted & outragous like the film itself & guaranteed to offend!

Yet as usual there are plenty of prudes out there..who cause stores to change artwork & so on. Afterall we must please everyone for some dumb reason.

I didn't know it had two covers. I have the first one you mentioned. Where did you see the other one? It might be a different region or a boot.

This movie will definately split viewers. It's a very surreal movie and the violence is pretty much over-done to the point where, to me, it becomes a very dark comedy. Very dark. Some of it is very disturbing. I loved the bravura that the filmmakers took to making this film. IMO, it's always good to push the envelope somewhat.

I was also not aware of Criterion using a 2nd cover with larger wording in the left hand corner. Has anyone actually seen this cover in stores? People may just be using this fake cover art on Ebay. Anyone?

I see mostly the second one, other then the difference in the position of the title, what is the difference?

I think the 2nd cover with the larger title is a little too much IMO.

Hmm that cover looks bad zoomed in. Is anyone sure it may be a fake?

Oh just noticed more blood is obscuring the pacifier in the zoomed in picture.

I bought it when it first came out and it has the smaller lettering/title.

meiso, he uses a semi-automatic like in the picture. At least the part I remember where he makes the joke about "playing the blunderbluss" and pulls up his shirt to reveal his handgun, and its like the one on the cover. Of course he could use a revolver at some point in the movie and I just may not remember. :)

When Criterion first announces a title, the cover art will often change before the DVD is released (for example, the first mock-up of the upcoming Umberto D. cover art had Vittorio De Sica's name misspelled as "Vitorrio DeSica;" likewise, the Jubilee cover has undergone several revisions). Some online retailers post the first image released and forget to update it for the final artwork, and I suspect that's what has happened in this case. The first artwork posted in this thread is the one on the Criterion website, so it's the "official" cover.
