A question &/or possible news about upcoming Kurosawa Criterion releases.

Maybe these have been announced already, but I couldn't find anything on them.

I was reading the very informative insert on the new Throne of Blood release. And in the essay by Linda Hoaglund, famed Japanese subtitle translator, she mentions that she has been asked by Criterion to write brand new subtitles for seven of Kurosawa's classics. As far as I know, some of these have not even been announced yet, but I could be wrong.

So I was just wondering if anyone knows if these have been announced. If not, then maybe I'm just relaying some good news for fellow Kurosawa fans, that there is more Akira goodness on it's way from Criterion.

Some of the titles she has made new subtitles for are:

Ikiru

The Bad Sleep Well

Drunken Angel

I Live In Fear

Stray Dog

For what it's worth. This may be my new favorite Kurosawa film Criterion has done so far. The first subtitle track is just brilliant, the movie has a wonderful transfer, & although I'm only half way through the commentary, it's as informative as any I've ever listened to. Not to mention , the cover is one of my favorites ever (although I know many hate it).

They havn't been anounced yet, but they are all Janus library titles, released on VHS by Home Vision, Laserdisc by Criterion, and are expected on DVD from Criterion. Criterion has always had the rights. It's just that AK is their bread and butter and they release only one or two a year.

Sessa17- what's the other subtitle track like? It's supposed to be some kind of more Shakespeare-ian translation or something right? How does it differ?

Thanks for the answer.

I haven't listened to the second track yet, but there should be significant contrast b/w the two tracks (which is a great selling point of the DVD) The first subtitle track you can definitely tell that the translator's goal was to avoid the Shakespear-ian basis of the film & take a different approach in translation. The subs reflect the pure Japanese experience & emotion of the film as accurate as possible through the English language. With this being such a wonderfully complex & rich movie, & really centered in midieval Japan lore, & not containing the contemporary themes that Seven Samurai & others have . It's really some of the best subtitle translation I've ever read IMO.

But it's good to know she's done.

Hopefully they'll get Ikuru out quickly. That's the one I'm waiting for.
