Stand Up Comedy - What can you recommend?

Hi

Please recommend the best stand-up comedy dvd´s.

My thumbs up for:

Jerry Senfeld-I'm Telling You For The Last Time.

Thanks in advance

Edgler

Eddie Izzard - Dress To Kill is one of the funniest (and most intelligent) standup routines I have ever seen. Also, you can't go wrong with pretty much any George Carlin disc.

jessecrx 05-14-03 04:57 PM

I heard that the new Robin Williams is REALLY good.

I recommend Chris Rock:Bring The Pain and Jamie Foxx "I Think I need Security"

Really good.

Let Rover take over.

Martin Lawrence: You So Crazy
The Original Kings of Comedy

I recommend:

Comedian - Saw this at the theatre (and watching it now!) - It follows Jerry and an on the verge comic as they build their acts- Very compelling

The Original Kings of Comedy - Good comedy from Cedric the Entertainer and Bernie Mac

Chris Rock - Bigger and Blacker -Kicks butt

Chris Rock - Bring The Pain - Kicks even more butt

Saturday Night Live - The Best of Steve Martin - There is at least 4 or 5 pretty long clips of Steve's classic stand up "Wild and Crazy Guy rountine". A MUST HAVE!

Andrew Dice Clay: Dice Rules! - As Gutwrencher pointed out...DICE IS THE KING!

Sam Kinison - Breaking the Rules and Family Entertainment Hour - SAM AT HIS KICKASS BEST!!

Eddie Murphy- Delirious and Raw - Incredible...Eddie at his Best!

The Jerry Seinfeld IS excellent. Comedian looks good but it's not as much of a funny movie as it is a documentary I heard. Supposedly Comedian is still worth checking out. Anyways back to your question:
anything by: GEORGE CARLIN
I have his double feature DVD, that's really funny but that's all i've seen of him. Also: AN EVENING WITH KEVIN SMITH is very funny. It's not quite stand up comedy, but it's been compared to stand up quite a bit. Crazydude mentioned SNL, The Best Of Chris Farley is the funniest ''best of...'' you can get.

Are there any George Carlin dvd's from the 70's and 80's.

Jerri Blank's Boy 05-14-03 08:28 PM

Margaret Cho: I'm The One That I Want

dvd2001 05-14-03 08:58 PM

I agree with many of the above, but the one I really want to see on DVD is:

BILL HICKS

Al Padrino 05-14-03 10:12 PM

There's a 4-disc Carlin set that features a couple HBO shows that are from the 80's. There's a total of 5 specials and very much worth the price.

laserdogg 05-14-03 10:23 PM

Andrew Dice Clay

Both of the Martin Lawrence DVDs

Does anyone remember the Sinbad HBO specials. One was Son of a Preacher Man, don't recall the other. I thought Sinbad was great in those specials - wish they were on DVD.

jk4w 05-14-03 10:28 PM

I cant believe nobody mentioned Richard Pryor :Live on the Sunset Strip.
This DVD is a must for any standup lover.Pryor is the Master !

Tyler_Durden 05-14-03 11:37 PM

I second the comment about Eddie Murphy: Delirious (haven't seen Raw). Hilarious.

Kromax 05-15-03 05:18 AM

Consider this another endorsement for The Original Kings of Comedy.

Rypro 525 05-15-03 06:09 AM

Raw from Murphy has not been released yet on dvd.

RussG 05-15-03 07:51 AM

Robin Williams - Live From Broadway
George Carlin - Jammin' In New York

When will we see Bill Cosby - Himself?

Actually, I was about to recommend Richard Pryor. However, I would go with RICHARD PRYOR: LIVE IN CONCERT.

I still remember seeing this for the first time back in '79 or '80, on ON-TV (anybody remember that service) and it's still just as funny now. Richard at his best, and probably the funniest comedy concert ever filmed...

Jeeden 05-15-03 09:05 AM

Robin Williams - Live From Broadway

This is great, the man is nuts.

Aslo, I would say An Evening with Kevin Smith. Although it isn't really stand-up, he can't help but being funny while answering questions from audiences.

Quake1028 05-15-03 09:47 AM

I'll second the mentions of:

Eddie Izzard-Dressed to Kill
Robin Williams-Live From Broadway
Jerry Seinfeld-I'm Telling You For the Last Time
Chris Rock-Bigger and Blacker
The Original Kings of Comedy

I'll first:

Margaret Cho-Notorious C.H.O.

I'll recommend you steer clear from the following:

Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat (I love his comedy, but except for a few parts, this was an extremely disappointing standup)

duz 05-15-03 10:33 AM

I hope Comedy Central releases the Comedy Central Presents episodes. Many of those comedians are rather good.

sade 05-15-03 10:44 AM

What about 'The Original Queens of Comedy' ? I almost peed my pants watching Somor (not sure about the spelling' :)

Sade

I was about to post that I wish that Robert Schimmel's HBO special was available on DVD, until I looked around and found his website (unsurprisingly) at www.robertschimmel.com where it says that his HBO special is now on DVD. The bad news is that it's $24.95 (a bit steep IMO) at his site, and I don't see it for sale anywhere else.

If you can rent it from netflix or somewhere, or if you can find it for a more reasonable price, I'd highly recommend it. However, you should be forwarned that it is filled with lots of profanity, toilet humor, sex jokes, etc. so stay away from it, if you're offended by that stuff.
