What Are the Five Best Criterions After Spine #100...Worst Five?

Since the announcement of "The Honeymoon Killers" I was curious to know what you all think the five best Criterion's are from The Beastie Boys anthology on up.

Woah woah woah... Man Bites Dog as one of the worst CCs released?!?! I thought it was a great film, good transfer and good audio. The extras weren't as many as, say, Fear and Loathing:CC, but it was a damn good release by Criterion. Especially when buying it on sale or using discounts for about $17-$20. Just me $0.02 though.

Hmmmm... the best? Probably:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Notorious
Rashomon
Solaris
Spartacus

Great films, great quality transfers, great extras, etc.

The worst? I don't think I can really come up with a list for that. There are some there that I don't care for, but nothing leaps out at me as being completely terrible. A few from 1-100 do (Salo, Flesh for Frankenstein/Blood for Dracula)... but not so much in this bunch.

EDIT: Why did you ask for a top 5 and then pick 7 yourself? Why not ask for a top 7?

Still a few that haven't come out, but here we go so far:

Best 5:

1. Rebecca
2. Solaris
3. In the Mood For Love
4. The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
5. Spartacus

+5

6. Band of Outsiders
7. Tokyo Olympiad
8. Sulivan's Travels
9. Red Beard
10.The Killers

New Filmmaker Award: George Washington

Special Award: Playtime

Wonderful Discovery Award: Closely Watched Trains

Best Audio Award: Red Beard in original 4 track mix!!!

Best Interview: George Lucas (Hidden Fortress)

Best Director's Commentary: Terry Gilliam (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas)

Best Critic/Academic Commentary: Solaris

Biggest Disapointments (note: there are some that I didn't buy because I figured they would be disapointments, ie. I am Curious...):

1. Grey Gardens (not an interesting subject)
2. The Lady Eve (not as good as Sulivan's and the suplements suck)
3. Man Bites Dog (controversial for its time, I enjoyed the suplement of the phoney trailer more)
4. Withnail and I (not that great a film, horible non-anamorpic picture)
5. The Royal Tenenbaums (just to be controversial )

I don't think "worst" is the right word...a little harsh. Sorry 'bout that, let's say most dissapointing--to you personally.

Best:

Sullivan's Travels
Traffic
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The Killers
The Vanishing

I've only seen about 50 of the 100 movies, so I'm assuming the bottom 5 are resting among those titles that I haven't seen.

Or -- here's a terrifying thought -- what if the *top* 5 are actually resting among those titles you haven't seen? It's thoughts like this that keep me up nights and keep my Netflix queue full.

Best Films of Spines 100-188 (note that this leaves out The 400 Blows, spine#5), limiting myself to one film per director:

1. Cries and Whispers
2. In the Mood for Love
3. Day of Wrath
4. Children of Paradise
5. Rashomon
6. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
7. Band of Outsiders
8. The Lady Eve
9. Notorious
10. 8-1/2

5 Best DVDs or Sets (spines 100-188):

1. 8-1/2
2. Wild Strawberries
3. The Adventures of Antoine Doinel Box Set
4. The Carl Th. Dreyer Box Set
5. Children of Paradise

I own 55 Criterions (with another 16 on order). The only film I've been disappointed in was Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, which I thought was [excrement], and sold the next day. But that isn't a knock against the DVD presentation (I recognize it's a favorite of a lot of people: to each his own). I'm also a little disappointed in the color transfer of The Life & Death of Colonel Blimp, but apparently it was an unavoidable problem with the film elements.

I only buy the Criterions I like so I will weigh in on those. Criterions are to expensive to blind buy or get if I do not like the movie.

That being said:

8 1/2
Children of Paradise
Sullivan's Travels
Hidden Fortress
Rashoman

I don't get all the I Am Curious hatin'. I guess it's one thing to not like the films, but the quality of the DVD and the extras are both pretty good.

My faves are:

1. Rebecca
2. 8 1/2
3. Rashomon
4. In The Mood For Love
5. Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas

I'm weighing in both the quality of the films, the audio/video presentation, and the quality of the extras.

My best:

8 1/2
Children of Paradise
The Vanishing
Wild Strawberries
Ali:Fear Eats The Soul (one of my alltime faves)

My worst:

Fear and Loathing (excellent DVD, excellent work by Gilliam, movie just annoyed me but masterful film making)

Safe to say 8 1/2 seems to be the concensus best.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Straw Dogs and The Royal Tenenbaums (particularly for the usually sub $15 price tag) are all excellent, as are Rashomon and Traffic.

While the transfer is superb, extras on My Man Godfrey and few and far between. And it's inexplicably one of the more expensive Criterions

And I'll go ahead and slam the next Michael Bay opus Criterion goes sluming for. Everyone ready for Bad Boys: CC?
