I just watched this film again recently after not having seen it in like 3 years, and it reminded me how great this film is. anyway, is there ever going to be a Special edition release of this film, or should I just buckle and buy the version that is available now?

Get the Canadian version. It's got some extras (deleted scenes, etc.). It's still got the same transfer and sound, but you definitely get more for your money...

There was supposed to be a Criterion DVD release of this a few years ago, if I'm not mistaken, but it never materialized. They did an excellent laserdisc version of it though, which was the director's cut.

the laserdisc was great, as I once owned it...will be picking up the UK edition as this being promoted as the 'definitive version' and tired of Miramax and their bs.

oh,, thanks. this is something i want.
but i'm a little reluctant to buy it. everytime i bought R2 2-disc special edition like this, Criterion put out their own edition. like Straw Dogs and In The Mood For Love (French disc).
and i think i'll rather wait for review first since i'm disappointed with the transfer of UK Straw Dogs discs. it's too soft and look like come from NTSC-converted master.

I'm getting this new SE for sure. It's funny how people talk about the "director's cut" considering that the movie was released uncut in most countries of Europe in the first place.

Cool. I didn't know there was a R2 speacial edition coming out. I will definetly be getting it. BTW I laove the cover art. Very reminiscent of criterion cover art. Ifit ever did come out in the US it would probably have BIG heads and critic blurbs all over it.

Well, the original, iconic poster does kind of showcase the stars (not that I mind):
