I haven't, but looking at the speed racer review makes me want to buy it, even thought I have no interest in the cartoon.

nope...but I would consider buying a cool poster of a movie that I never saw.

I've certainly been influenced by packaging before...especially for Book of the Dead, but it's not the reason why I bought it.

I haven't bought a DVD because of its cover art, but I've been impressed with a few.

And since you brought it up, the new Speed Racer rubber tire cover is cool. I just got it today.

EDIT: Woo-hoo! I just became a Special Edition!

I have grown to like cover art more - but I would NEVER even think of buying a DVD unless I know I would watch the movie more than once.

I'll admit that if a movie has already tempted me, then the DVD packaging can push me into the purchase zone.

But of course it's the movie inside that really matters. I've bought plenty of DVDs with dreadful packaging, but to me the quality of the packaging can enhance or take away from the whole DVD watching experience. I'm sure it sounds odd to some people, but it's just not as enjoyable for me to take a poorly designed DVD from my shelf before watching it. While on the other hand I actually get an extra tinge of pleasure when I pick up DVDs like Fight Club (2-disc) or Roger Rabbit, or The Royal Tennenbaums, or Futurama, or Memento LE simply because of their packaging.

Naturally, the fact that I design for a living definitely affects my attitude in this area. And I have bought a number of other items for the packaging and the packaging alone.

Like dave19 just mentioned.... I saw the unusual box for The Coffin Joe box set and it piqued my curiousity enough to check into it. I even posted on here asking about the movies. I never picked it up but it was a great marketing ploy.

I guess I've bought some Criterions because the Criterion label caused me to pick it up, read the back, get intrigued then buy it. Never been disappointed, though.

It would never even cross my mind to buy a DVD simply because of the cover or packaging, or (as a few people have posted elsewhere) NOT buy a movie I wanted simply because it is in a snapper or has an ugly cover.

Well, sort of... a few weeks ago I was in my local Best Buy, and they had a copy of The Frighteners with the OLD cover. I bought it. Technically, I'd been thinking of buying the title for a long time anyway, but it was a low priority. When the cover changed, I wanted it even less. So finding the original cover WAS the reason for buying it then and there.

Other than that... I don't think so.

Do you have a before/after pic? I never knew they changed, I'm curious what I have.

I bought the Japanese LD of David Cronenberg's Shivers (which I also own on 2 different DVDs) for the coverart. It has a very gory cover, and, when I had Cronenberg autograph it for me a couple of months ago, he told me that he had never seen it before.

It is funny you brought this up because I was just talking about it the other day. I bought Speed Racer on Tuesday when I went to pick up my new releases simply because the cover is so freakin' cool!

I was going to get around to getting the Romeo + Juliet:SE DVD eventually, but never did. Then I saw a photo of the cover for R+J in the Red Curtain Trilogy boxset, and I had to buy it. (Lucky for me Best Buy had a sale on all DVD boxset the week I found out about the boxset)

p.s. I tried looking for an image to post of the cover but couldn't find it.

New Frighteners cover:

It matters not that I posted small ones, you can tell the new cover is awful even at that size!

I've looked up details about movies where the cover art intrigues me, but I've never made a purchase based on it.

I've never bought a dvd based on the cover art. It really doesn't matter to me. It's what's on the inside that counts.

No, and the idea of doing so seems pretty ridiculous to me.

Heck, I won't even rent a DVD because of the cover art.
