Tisk Tisk. Surprised no one has included either Noir or Chobits. Chobits can be iffy, but Noir is a definate, IMO.
Others I've seen and enjoyed:
Cowboy Bebop
Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Outlaw Star
Inu-Yasha
Rurouni Kenshin (sorry if I misspelled)
Trigun
Hellsing (Good to try before you buy)
Perfect Blue
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
This list is nowhere near exhaustive of good Anime out there and there are series and Movies I haven't seen, but it's what I have enjoyed.

Lain is great. So is Patlabor, i haven't seen any of the films but i love the episodes. I actually just found out today that Vol 3 and 4 has already been released. My favorite is Blackjack, but the best episodes/films arn't on dvd yet at least not in R1(at least not to my knowledge they arn't i'd be a happy camper if i was wrong). There is one film out on dvd for Blackjack but it isn't as good as some of the early ones.

oooh Patlabor, that is a good suggestion, but I would start off with:
Cowboy Bebop (series before movie)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (series before movies)
Lain
Princess Mononoke
Castle in the Sky
Castle of Cagliostro
Kiki's Delivery Service (story more geared towards children but people of all ages will love it)
Ghost in the Shell (don't get if you can't sit through a slow story, but this one will be available for rent so try that first)
Check out cartoon network see if there is anything you like there.
I don't think anyone would disagree with these picks.

I loved "Spirited Away" and "Castle In the Sky", I'll have to watch more Miyazaki films.
I tried to watch "Akira" and "Vampire Hunter D", but those bored me, I'll have to try to watch them again.
And I'm new to anime too by the way.

Go on amazon, buy the cowboy bebop 6 disc set for 98.92 retail would be around 180 if spending 29.99 a disc. Watch those, and if you enjoyed it, get the movie.

noir's only on disc 2 so far and i found the series to drag till say ep 9 when it got better. as for chobits.. it's good, but the manga was better.

i too am a fan of anime, not a big fan, but a fan nonetheless. i would second the recommendation of jin-roh but not as a film to start your anime experience. the ghibli films are however.
other films i consider anime but some may not.
final fantasy the spirits within. story is lacking but visuals are worth it.
the animatrix due out in june but 3 are already available for download at www.whatisthematrix.com
and spawn the animated series. fine fine show that needs to be continued.

Anime DVDs, any suggestions?
I wanna start buying me some Anime films or series on DVD and i need some suggestions. I just recently bought one of my favorites Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie and the Street Fighter II V: The Collection box set. I have my eyes set on getting these next, Nightwalker (both discs, episodes 1-12), Akira, Animatrix, Vampire Hunter D and Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust. Just to let you know a bit what im into, i like dark stories, especially Vampire stuff. Im not too interested in the Tech or Mech Animes like Robotech or Gundham.

Ninja Scroll should be up your alley. Try also Noir and chobits, it has some cutesy to it but it also has a bit of a dark side to it. Wicked City,
Some Mech Animes can be dark you know. Neon Genesis was pretty morbid as it progressed so I would recommand that series.
HELLSING is something you might enjoy.

In a similar vein to 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' may i also suggest the excellent 'RahXephon'.

Blood: The Last Vampire
Blood is a bit short and you can rate your own opinion of the anime, but the soundtrack and production of this anime title is worth seeing if for nothing else.
