I don't mind most of these re-releases since they're coming out anywhere from 2-3 years after the previous DVD. In most cases, this means the studios can now offer us improved video quality and audio options like DTS which weren't widely supported back then.
Where I do have a problem is when companies like Sony intentionally hold back on extras or do a half-assed job on the transfer just so they can reissue a "Superbit" DVD a few months down the line. In that instance, there's no excuse to not do it right the first time. |
Originally posted by TomOpus I don't see this as a problem yet. Whenever someone complains about re-releases they always bring up the same 5 or 6 titles. Considering the numbers of titles out there if this only happens to a small number of releases, then I don't understand getting upset over this. At least not yet :) |
I'm with Doughboy. I can't stand how Sony has been handling their Superbit line. Either they release a standard DVD with a Superbit follow up or a Superbit and then a Superbit Deluxe follow up. Most times these Superbit titles are new releases that should be done right the first time. I don't begrudge them the Superbit versions of titles like Labyrinth or Das Boot since the originals were made before the Superbit line was created and there was an improvement needed.
As for the Evil Dead and Halloween flicks these are done by Anchor Bay who only has so many licensed titles to work from to make money. I held off on Stargate until they got it right with the ultimate edition. No anamorphic no sale for me and the last one finally had it. This is the reason I still haven't picked up Top Gun and many others. I've been holding off getting Batman and Batman Returns for years because of rumors of rereleases coming. I just know if I pick it up next week the next day they'll announce the new versions. |
