Terminator 2 Extreme- No theatrical cut, no extra special edition?

If the new T2 DVD doesn't have the theatrical cut and the special hidden version thingie I don't want it. Who cares if it looks better on PC? PC's are for internet, burning CD/DVD's, printing and typing, nothing more, in my opinion.

I think it has the SE and the theatrical edition in enhanced WM9 mode (from what I understood, but I could be mistaken). And no extended cut.

But I disagree on your views about playing DVDs on a PC. It has advantages, namely:

PAL/NTSC issues don’t exist

Region issues easily don’t exist

No problems playing any format!

as for viewing it on the monitor, you could just hook it up to a TV.

Tarantino 04-13-03 10:47 PM

There's no region codes on my computer? I didn't know that...that means I can order R2 and R3 DVDs???

Mr. Salty 04-13-03 11:14 PM

Region codes do exist on your computer, but depending on the brand of your DVD-ROM drive it's fairly easy to circumvent them.

Dogmatix 04-13-03 11:16 PM

Do all newer generation video cards convert PAL discs to NTSC output?

I've got an old PC along with an ATI7200 (w/S-vid out) that I'd like to hook up to my A/V system to play R2/PAL discs but I don't want to invest more $$ than a new case for the PC.

Any info appreciated. Thanks in advance.

In some DVD drives there is no region lock code, in others it’s there but can be fixed using a firmware upgrade from

http://www.firmware.fr.st/

Once your DVD-Rom drive is free, you download Power DVD (best player) and any region lock is on the software side.

You then use DVD genie to switch between regions

http://www.inmatrix.com/files/dvdgenie_download.shtml

It’ll also tell you if your drive is region locked (if it isn’t you don’t need to go through the firmware upgrade)

As for PAL/NTSC issues, I repeat: these don't exist on your computer

Is there a list online somewhere that will tell me whether or not my drive is region free? I'm very interested in some R2 DVD's that I don't want to waste money on...

jiggawhat 04-14-03 05:09 PM

Just search in google for your model number and put in region free firmware. It will probably take a few tries to find it.

your pc should tell you. click on the dvd/rom to see. mine can be switched a limited # of times....then it will be stuck on the last one chosen. but thats just mine I can speak for.

so use a firmware upgrade.

Thanks for the info on those firmware hacks!

I'm mainly getting it because it's supposed to have better video quality and a "real" James Cameron commentary.

Microsoft have introduced bloody location protection onto this disk. To play the WMP9 version on your PC, you have to be connected to the Internet via a N American server. I for one think this might be a downhill slope with Microsoft's plans for dominance of the DVD format (see here) . Before you know it, we'll have to mail in our passports to Microsoft with proof of residence before they'll give us a license - give me region coding anyday :grunt:

They took all the commentary from interview footage, and the EE has a full commentary.

This alone is worth the double dip for me..

What's wrong with the original transfer??..I thaught it looked pretty good for a "dark" movie??

Are there any new features that are not required to view on a dvd-rom or deleted scenes??

Cheers!

The Ultimate Edition transfer had edge enhancement which got on a few people's nerves (never bothered me). More noticeable on large screen displays anyway.

There are FEWER deleted scenes on the Extreme Edition because it doesn't have the Ultimate Version of the movie, only the Special Edition (DVD player) and Theatrical Version (WMP9). No DTS either.

shanester 05-23-03 08:16 PM

Squirrel,

Thanks for the info!

If the transfer is vastly improved then I might upgrade. Cameron is a very intelligent guy I always like what he has to say in interviews.

I just hope the "king of the world" lets the other guy (William Wisher co-writer) share the commentary track too..:)

Squirrel God 05-23-03 08:20 PM

Shanester,

Some comparison screenshots between Ultimate and Extreme Editions are here. Doesn't look to be much in it to me, certainly not a vast improvement going on those s/shots.

DavidH 05-24-03 01:11 AM

These screen shot comparisons are significant. The impact will be much greater as the screen size increases. My TV is 61" and these two versions will look night and day.

eau 05-24-03 01:43 AM

Darn! Looks like the visual improvement is significant enough for re-buying T2 over again. Sighhh....

Thanks for the pics!..I did notice an improvement. Looks like another sucker(me) is going to double dip and bring in more $$$ for the studio

Exactly. That's the key. Even the slightest improvement makes a difference on a bigger screen. On regular CRT widescreen TVs though, I think many will not notice and certainly wouldn't have noticed the edge enhancement on the original Ultimate Ed release.
