DVD Aspect Ratio Question - Jimmy Stewart
 

I'm very excited to see that there will be a large number of Jimmy Stewart movies released on DVD in May. However, I have noticed that Universal has The Far Country listed at FULL FRAME!!!!!! Does anyone know if this is true or a misprint:confused::(

On a related note - Fox is releasing Flight of the Phoenix, but I can't find the aspect ratio of the DVD. Does anyone know what it will be:confused:

I hope these two releases are not screwed-up.

The good news is that (as far as I can tell) the other Stewart releases will be in their OAR's.

According to IMDB, The Far Country was released in 1954. They also list an AR of 1.75 to one, but since it falls within a year or two of the generally accepted switchover date of 1955 for Academy ratio to widescreen, I'd say it was shot full frame with allowances made for it to be matted to 1.75 if needed.

I'll check my laser disc and see if it's letterboxed or not, I don't remember off hand.

BTW: I found that TCM broadcasts The Far Country in a letterboxed version.

I sure hope this will not be released in full frame as indicated by Universal:( It would be a crime to alter this great Anthony Mann film with Jimmy Stewart. If it's true I can't understand why they would do this.

Whe the J. Stewart 5/2003 titles were first announced many were supposed to be double features. The Far Country/Bend of the River were supposed to be one double feature. Hopefully The Far Country will be OAR and it is a misprint. Bend of the River came out in 1952 so that should be FF.

are Anamorphic Widescreen so maybe The Far Country will be FF since it is listed as FF. thanks for the Universal link. Last time I looked I could not find a thing for these titles.

From every on-line store I checked this title is listed as Anamorphic Widescreen while IMDB has it listed as FF which I think is correct.

Does anyone have The Glenn Miller Story and is it WS or FF?

Whoops, forgot to check it last night. I just wrote myself a note. I just turned 50 a couple of weeks ago, gettin' old isn't for sissies.

Then there's always the Anatomy Of A Murder debate ...... Was it in 1.33 in theaters; or 1.66 or 1.85?

(Packaging for the Full-Screen DVD says the 1.33:1 ratio reflects the theatrical ratio. But, is this accurate...or a vast Jimmy Stewart-type of AR conspiracy??! :))

The laser disc is 1.33x1. It's a double disc with Bend of the River, released in '96. Most any wide screen film was letterboxed on laser disc by '96 so I'm not sure what the deal is.
