The original Vacation movie may be basically barebones and P&S, but it's a damn fine movie and at just $10 in most places, you'd be a damn fool to pass it up.

Actually, I think you'd be a fool to buy a P&S version of this film. Purchasing non-OAR films sends the wrong message to the studios. In my book, no OAR=no sale.

Since this set isn't available anywhere else, I would assume that DDD is just selling the individual titles as a package.

True..but there are some flicks you just need to have..

For me, this was one of 'em..If WB ever gets off their asses and decided to rerelease this bad boy with its OAR i'll definitely pick it up..

[Or you could always buy the r2 DVD..

Agreed, these are good movies to get at a great price.

They're comedies, you are only fooling yourself if you think there is any sort of photgraphic composition in these flicks..

Hey, I love the Vacation movies too. I just don't like the slippery slope you start down if we say P&S is ok for comedies or movies without any sort of photographic composition. It is this kind of thinking that created the P&S problem in the first place. Without exception, all movies should be released OAR.

I agree, I really do.. if I was given the choice I know which one I would buy.. but I seriously doubt "going down the slope" a bit for open matte comedies is going to affect the widescreen movies that have real artistic value.

I agree with Rouge 588, I just had to have Christmas Vacation, that is one funny movie. I collect moveis that I enjoy and yes I would prefer them in OAR but if not I will get the movie because I enjoy it and will watch it time and again.

Hey, I'd like WS just as much as anyone else, but there are some movies that are too good to pass up at a price like that. I don't see them doing anything about it anytime soon, so I just figured why not pick it up? I don't like P&S but I can live with it in some cases. Some people are too uptight about WS and P&S.

I remember HTF doing a chat with Warner's sometime ago and they asked with a straightface "Is there really a desire for comedies to be in widescreen?"

They seriously have no idea of what we want except for what we buy. I am dying not having Christmas Vacation, but I will not purchase the current foolscreen disc.

When you buy something done improperly, you are rewarding bad behavior.

I won't buy that excuse one bit, if that's the case then why did WB release European Vacation in WS?

Yeah they're clueless or they would've already released them in WS ( the same way WB(and other studios) released comedies such as Risky Business with both screen formats

YES!!!!!! I won't be giving them money for inproperly done DVDs

Can Bac, that chat was done some time ago, well before European Vacation was released, probably as a direct result of that chat. It's just stuck in my head for so long because it's so mind-numbingly stupid.

Or you can do what I did, pick up the Region 4 WS Vacation, and the Region 2 Vegas Vacation also anamorphic WS, the only one I cannot find anamorphic is Christmas.

One important fact that hasn't been mentioned so far is that European Vacation blows.

p&s issue aside, it's 4 bucks cheaper at DDD to put each of the four moves in your cart individually

VACATION (NATIONAL LAMPOON) $ 7.91 x = $ 7.91
CHRISTMAS VACATION $ 14.39 x = $ 14.39
VEGAS VACATION (NATIONAL LAMPOON) $ 7.91 x = $ 7.91
EUROPEAN VACATION (NATIONAL LAMPOON) $ 9.89 x = $ 9.89

Your Subtotal: $ 40.10

(and you could save another $9.89 if you dropped European Vacation..................)

Why do I want those stupid black bars cutting out the picture? I want the movie to show on my whole tv screen.

So, is it better to have a movie that is sub-par (e.g. European Vacation, which is not great but still has some pretty funny parts, "I JUST can't seem to get left...") yet OAR, or a that's the top of the bunch (Vacation) yet P&S? I've held off buying the first one, one of my favorites of all time, because it's not OAR and I know as soon as I buy it the Ultimate SE will come out, but I can't hold out much longer...

I hope you're kidding. Because Widescreen doesn't cut off the picture, you're actually getting more. I don't want to get too deep into it if you're just kidding.

Please tell me you're kidding!

Wrong.. these movie are open matte.. you see more in the full frame version. Now of course, more or less is not important.. but I do find it laugable that there are still people that insist movies like this have a "right image"..
