DVD Audio

I am thinking about getting a new player, but I am not too sure I should spend about 100 bucks more for DVD Audio capability. How is the selections of DVD audio? Can someone give me a pros and cons?

Thanks

I've got one. The audio quality is awesome, but the selection could be limited depending on what you normally listen to. The format lends itself better to jazz and classical styles than anything else so that's what makes up the majority of the discs. I personally only have 2, Metallicas black album and Queens A night at the opera.

...DVD-Audio...?... from the looks of it lots of long-dead people: Louis Armstrong! Duke Ellington! Ella Fitzgerals! Miles Davis!...

. . . :o . . .

I'd recommend you look at available titles on DVD-A and SACD, and make your decision on that basis. I'd recommend SACD, but my tastes may well be different than yours.

Here are some fairly comprehensive lists:

DVD-A: http://www.amusicdirect.com/products...tegory&srch=70

SACD: http://www.amusicdirect.com/products...tegory&srch=30

And note that SACD currently has hundreds and hundreds more titles than DVD-A, as well as most of the momentum. I hope both survive, but it's looking a bit sketchier for DVD-A. Universal/BMG's recent announcement that they would also start producing DVD-A titles (in addition to SACDs) represents a huge shot in the arm for the DVD-A camp and indicates to me that reports of DVD-A's demise are premature.

I'm not sure about SACD, but the prices for DVD-A has come down recently. I think they're trying to compete with SACD better. I own a couple titles and want a few more. The sound is pretty cool, especially when it's mixed right.

I only have 1 SACD (Dark Side of the Moon) and only because it's a hybrid that's playable as a regular CD. Prices seem to be close to regular CD prices but the players are pretty expensive (at least for me).

Dont all DVD players play DVD audio?

Not unless the DVD-A has a standard DVD track.

Most dvd-a discs that I've seen carry a DD 5.1 track and/or DTS 5.1 which will play on any dvd player. To hear the sonicly superior(as far as I understand it)dvd-a track a dvd-a compatable player is required.

As far as I can tell I can hear the sonicly superior music and my dvd player says nothing about DVD A...
Actually..in the manual it says it can play DVD A..but its not one of the selling features..
