Read this book several years ago, never got around to seeing the movie.
It looks like it should be a beautiful film visually.
Saw it at WALMART for $14.99 and wanted to pick it up , but I have always heard negative things about this film.
Who's got a review for me???
thanks

It does have gorgeous visuals, but the story just isn't that interesting, which is a shame b/c it should be. For some reason it is just overly long and boring. Worth a rental or trade (which I bet is very possible) but not worth $15.

I may be a minority, but I like the film. Visually it is quite stunning and the dvd transfer is really good. I like movies about Tibet and thought this film to be really interesting. There are a few bad Pitt moments (I think he'll mature as an actor with more time), but I enjoy the film itself. I also love Kundun and many people think that was a flop for Scorsese. If you liked the book, then you already know you like the story. You should at least rent it at the very least. Or you could just pay twice a rental price and get it from Columbia House for an average disc price of about $9.80 That's what I did. I haven't watched the whole dvd yet (i did check out certain parts to check the quality of the transfer), but I did see the film in the theater and used to own a vhs copy.

None of my friends liked it... but I liked it a lot and have seen it 3 times. I appreciated the visuals the most (though I must add that the mountain scenes were not filmed in the Himalayas, but in the Andes). I also liked Brad Pitt's character development. Maybe a bit long, but no complaints for me.

I haven't seen it since it came out in the theatres, but I remember really liking it a lot. Brad Pitt is kind of a self-absorbed Nazi pretty boy adventurer, who doesn't think too much of other people, and after being exposed to a culture much different than he's used to, and going through a bit of personal loss, failure and suffering, he matures spiritually. Along with the amazing cinematography, what I like about this movie is that it wasn't some naive, shallow Hollywood idea of "Eastern religions have all the answers, if only stupid Westerners would listen"--Although Pitt's transformation was in part due to the Buddhist influence of his surroundings, his growth as a person was subtle and believeable, and took place over quite a long time--that made it a lot more effective for me.
