I was, well, "honored" to be able to take an early look at Fox's upcoming special edition of "Men Of Honor". The film stars Cuba Gooding, Jr. as real-life Navy diver Carl Brashear, who fought against racism and a serious injury to rise up in the ranks of the elite Navy divers.

It's not a film without a few minor flaws, but what carries it is Cuba Gooding, Jr's wonderful performance. Intense, dramatic, believable and engaging, his performance really makes us root for Carl to succeed.

Fox has also put together a very fine special edition for the film. The movie is presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio and is anamorphic. Although Fox has done some wonderful work lately, their effort for "Men Of Honor" is particularly excellent. The image quality is consistently sharp, detailed and free of all but (literally) a couple of minor print flaws - certainly nothing that's at all distracting, especially considering how strong the rest of the presentation is.

The film is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. Although many of the film's scenes are driven by dialogue and Mark Isham's score, there are a few scenes throughout the film that provide a very intense and exciting sound experience, especially one that has a sunken ship sliding down an underwater cliff.

There's also some great extras included. We get a commentary track from director George Tillman, producer Robert Teitel, writer Scott Smith and also, actor Cuba Gooding, Jr contributes to the commentary. All of the particpants were recorded together and the commentary is both informative and entertaining.

2 documentaries, 11 deleted scenes w/optional commentary, an alternate ending w/optional commentary, 2 trailers & 2 TV ads, soundtrack promo, music video and animated storyboard w/commentary round out a very nice DVD from Fox.

You can find my full film & dvd review at the link below. "Men Of Honor" is a very good film and gets a very nice DVD from Fox. Recommended (out April 10th, 2001).

Anyone know the special editions for Men of Honor?

I won a free pre-order DVD, and I'm thinking about Men of Honor, is it good?

My review...

Pretty good movie. Kept my interest with great acting but a powerfully written screenplay/script was the winner here. Not even Carrottop could have messed this one up. Well, maybe that's a stretch.

The dvd has an awful lot of deleted scenes and an alt ending. They did good to cut these scenes as they did nothing for the film. The director said he intended for this to be a 3 hour movie, but thankfully he cut it down to 128 minutes.

For me, great rental, but I probably won't buy it.

Just received my copy from Amazon....

Watched it last night and enjoyed it very much....have not viewed the extras yet but will tonight!!! It has commentary...a featurette and some other items I have not had a chance to look through yet. Transfer was nice......good sound....My opinion is that it is worth a purchase. Robert DeNiro and Cuba Gooding, Jr. make this movie worth the purchase...Charlize Theron plays a limited role in this movie....I personally did not see the point of having her character in this movie but that is just my opinion.

I bought this one, and it's a pretty good movie. Not the greatest, but everyone in it did a good job and the picture and sound is all great. I haven't explored the extras just yet, but there's a lot of goodies to check out

Charlize Theron needs no reason to be in a movie!

Rented it last week and thought it was decent. The story holds up (for the most part) and the performances are quite good. As for the extras, I was pleasantly surprised. The deleted scenes (all 12 or so of them) are good to watch. The DD 5.1 mix and anamorphic transfer are good too.
